.pdf files no longer open in Acrobat Pro 9.0, after latest Reader DC installation on my Win 10 64b machine, even though Windows has Acrobat set as the default App for .pdf files. Reader DC overrides Windows' setting of Acrobat s the default App for .pdf files. How do I override Reader DC's overriding of the Windows' default App setting?

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble.
By default the application with the latest version becomes the PDF handler on the machine. Since Acrobat Reader DC is the recent version application as compared to Acrobat 9 so it is taking over the PDF files.
If you want to use the Acrobat 9 as the default application, you need to remove the Acrobat Reader DC from your system.
Note: It is not recommended to install Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader on the same machine as Acrobat Reader is a subset of Adobe Acrobat.

Thanks for the response. I'll remove Reader DC so Acrobat 9 can be the default for pdf files. I have noticed, however, that some pdf's will not open in Acrobat 9 so I will have to temporarily reinstall Reader DC when/if that happens.

Reader DC is constantly replacing Acrobat 9 Pro without so much as a by your leave! I can't can't get Adobe to address this issue as they no longer support Acrobat 9 Pro. I bought a perpetual license and the program is perfect for my needs. I just want Acrobat to leave me alone but I can't help but think that stealing my install is their way of forcing me to upgrade. I've spent way to much time uninstalling Reader and reinstalling Pro only to have it happen over and over. The only way I can prevent Reader from hijacking my programs is to keep a PDF open at all times. I'm using Windows 11. Hope I'm wrong about Adobe and it's a Windows issue but...

I wish someone at Acrobat would come up with a fix for this. They can stop updating and supporting the software, but removing it from computers by force is, as was stated before, tantamount to theft. Uninstalling Reader and reinstalling 9 pro works, and if you disable the update service and the update task, it seems to last about 2-3 weeks, but then somehow does it again. I've been reinstalling every 2-3 weeks because I am stubborn, but about ready to just pay for the new license, which is what they want.

If you want to keep using this old paid-for software you need to give up on trying to also run this free software. Adobe are working to make it impossible for Acrobat and Reader to coexist. I don't think this is specifically to force people to upgrade (though that would surely be a happy result for them), it's part of changing Reader into a free app with premium upgrades available. Acrobat and Reader are the same thing, it just depends whether you pay.
