PDF opening error

New Here ,
Jul 29, 2020 Jul 29, 2020

The error reads: "Adobe Reader could not open … because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn’t correctly decoded)."

This PDF was saved by myself to my desktop this morning. Unfortunately now it does not want to open. It was not emailed. The size of the pdf is 46.6Kb. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat Reader DC and restarted my computed..no luck. This is also the ONLY file that is not working out of the 3 I saved early.

I've looked though the threads but it seems the only way to retrieve this pdf is to be somewhat familiar with coding, which I am not. Am I just SOL with all the data I inputted in there? What caused this?

Hi Brittbritt

We are sorry for the trouble. As described you are getting the error 'Adobe Reader could not open … because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn’t correctly decoded)'

Usually the conflict stems from how those PDFs were created and that is where most of the problems come from. It could be created from an older version of Acrobat, someone could have used an online converter that produce a bad copy of the PDF, the converter tools on Acrobat could be damaged in some way.

What is the version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Adobe Acrobat Reader and make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. Go to Help > Check for Updates.
For more informtion, please take alook at the help page https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotesDC/index.html

You may also try the steps/solutions provided in the help page https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-error-1015-11001-update.html and see if that works for you.

Keep us posted with the results

Regards

Amal

I am using the most updated version. Is there any further guidance on second solution? Perhaps a step by step guide of where I'm inputting the code at?

Am I just SOL with all the data I inputted in there?

Do you mean you filled out a form or that you used Acrobat for page layout?

It's a PDF document that has spaces to write whatever you want in.

You said that you are using Adobe Acrobat Reader.

  • Who created the file? How did you get it if you didn't create it?
  • What software was used to create the source document?
  • What were the steps for making the PDF (if you know)?
  • What did you do to the PDF (specifically) when you opened it in Reader, worked on it, and saved it?
  • Do you have a copy that you didn't work on?
  • Do you have the source file?

I'm not sure who created it, you can download the template/form from google.

All I did was fill in some of the information blocks and saved it (like I've done for years).

I do have a copy/can find one I didnt work on.

I'm not sure what the source file is.

LATEST

Something went wrong. ☹️ If you want me to try to open it you can click my name and send a PM and I'll see if it opens here. If you have to recreate it, then do a Save As with a new name every so often so you have it saved at different stages, and try reopening as you go.

It could be something in the original PDF. Had you used this particular form before?
