PDF thumbnails inside of a white square

Community Beginner ,
Nov 16, 2021 Nov 16, 2021

Hello

Suddenly, my pdf thumbnails appear inside of a kinda white square, like this: https://i.ibb.co/0B5ggMW/white-borders.jpg

I have no idea why this started happening, but installing an older Adobe Reader version has not helped and I cannot undo the most recent Windows update anymore.

I've tried these, but neither helped:

- Clear Thumbnail Cache

- Delete IconCache.db

- Use this fix

- In Adobe Reader, turn off and on miniature preview

Between these steps, I of couse always restarted the computer

I want it to look like this: https://i.ibb.co/Xs2bCSZ/correct.png

(for some reason, I have this problem only on my laptop, but not on my desktop pc, even if both are the same Win 10 version, same updates, same Reader version, etc)

Does anyone have an idea how to get rid of that?

Thanks

Does you get this with all PDF files?

I have the same problem. I'm going to be crazy, but none of the solutions works for me. I just updated from Acrobat DC 2019 to 2023 and the problem started to appear.

Hello. Just wondering if you ever found a resolution to this problem? I am currently trying to figure out how to get rid of that same white border on the pdf thumbnail. We made a jump from windows 7 to windows 11. Windows 7, our thumbnail pdf file previews didn't have the white border, but windows 11 thumbnails do. Thanks for your time! Adam

I have the same problem. Apparently the ACROBAT 64-bit preview handler does not take transparency or alpha blending into account. The old Acrobat 32 bit preview handler did it right and took transparency into account and it looked very nice. Since 64 bit so for about ten years the limitation exists. Now I wonder why Adobe doesn't fix the problem. It's not essential, but it used to look much nicer.

Adobe does a lot of advertising with new technologies etc., but I can't take it seriously if something so fundamental is not corrected.

Hi @Michael_X15,

Hope you are doing well. Thanks for writing in!

I was going through the thread, and from the description, this is an Explorer issue, not related to Acrobat.

One suggestion I would like to add is to go to the Start Menu, type "File Explorer Options, "go to the View Tab, uncheck the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails", apply, and then OK.

Once done, go to Start Menu-> type "Disk Cleanup"-> scroll down the list to check "Temporary Files" and "Thumbnails"-> OK-> click "Delete Files" on the next window-> allow for it to complete.

Restart the computer and then try again.

Hope this helps.

Hello Souvik,

I did what you asked me to do, even though I knew it probably wouldn't help.

Have a look at the attached picture, it shows the symbols with white frame on the desktop.

The Explorer Preview works fine since long, but not the desktop icons preview.

Hi @Michael_X15,

This is expected. The white portions that you see on the icon preview are the white space left after the borders of the page.

If you see the white spaces, it varies from page to page, and it cannot be removed.

I tried it with a Windwows 11 PC and there were no white borders there. It seems to be a Windows 10 problem and I would like Adobe to point this out to Microsoft.

Thanks, @Michael_X15, for sharing the insights.

Would you mind writing this here: https://acrobat.uservoice.com/ to ensure it reaches the dev team for review and future implementation?

I created an account and entered all the information. When pressing the publish button I got the respond: "Leider konnten wir Ihre Anfrage nicht bearbeiten." Translated: "Unfortunately we were unable to process your enquiry."

Great, THX

@Michael_X15 That's strange.

Could be a network glitch. Would you mind trying again?

Hello,
I have created the feature request / bug report.
The upload of a JPG was blocked. The PNG went through.
Best regards
