Problem when copying text with characters such as ä, ö, ü, ß, etc. from Adobe Acrobat Pro

New Here ,
Feb 19, 2022 Feb 19, 2022

So yeah, since i got my new MacBook (M1), whenver copy a text out of a pdf, opened with acrobat pro, which includes characters such as ä, ö, ü, ß, etc. and then paste the text to another program (pages, text edit, etc...) those characters are lost. For example, the german word "selbstständig" will become "selbstst ndig".

This is a real pain, and i just googled for an hour, but never found an answer to this problem, that i can understand (sadly do not know anything about coding), or which is not from 6+ years ago...

I would really appreciate, if anyone has a solution to offer!

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in response.

Please try updating the application to the latest version available. You may go to Help > Check for updates.

Check if you still experience the issue after updating the application.

For more information on the latest updates for Acrobat, please refer to the following page: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/release-note/release-notes-acrobat-reader.html.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Meenakshi

The problem still persists with Ü and ü (typically used in German text).

When copying text from a PDF in Acrobat Pro, these letters are replaced by regular U and u, respectively, but with a second, overlaying character to add the double dots above them. This is heavily frustrating because the error is not immediately apparent, but when using the copied text in Word, Excel, or other applications, spell-checking fails, find and replace does not work, the double dots are not exactly placed above the letters etc.

Please just do not replace Ü and ü in the first place. It seems to work correctly with Ä and ä, and Ö and ö.

I am working on macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 with Adobe Acrobat Pro and a paid professional license.

Hi there

Thanks for reaching out.

Please update the application to the recent version 24.02.20687. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also try to copy the text with formatting, in the right-click menu and see if that works.

My version of Acrobat is up to date. It does not matter whether I copy and paste text from Acrobat into other applications as plain text or text with formatting.

The letter "ü" is pasted as "u" with an additional overlaying character for the dots, not as "ü".

Hi there

I tried to reproduce the issue at my end and its working fine.

Here are few suggestions to try:

1. Please try to export the PDF to MS Word and recreate the PDF from the exported Word file and try to copy and paste the text with special characters from the newly created PDF and see if you are still getting the same issue.

2. Have you created the PDF file in question or have you got it from a different user, would you mind sharing the PDF file in question so we can check it at our end.
