"Choose Paper Source by PDF Page Size" - Mac + HP Printer

New Here ,
Jan 11, 2022 Jan 11, 2022

Hi. Please let me get lucky and find a solution here! I have a Macbook Pro current OS Catalina 10.15.7. The printer is a HP LaserJet Pro M404dw.

Here are the things I have tried (mentioned here in the forums) that don't work:

- printing the pages backwards/upside down

- using Foxit PDF Reader

- turning off "Enable Enhanced Security"

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat reader, restarted the printer and computer, and it still won't separate the documents sizes. Only change made was when I printed from Foxit; instead of printing from tray 2, it printed from tray 1. All drivers and software are the most up to date. I contacted HP and they directed me to contact Adobe.... but Adobe doesn't take calls unless you pay for a product. *eyeroll*

Thank you for the resolution in advance!

Hi Lea

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble. As described you are unable to print from the correct tray

Would you mind sharing the version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC you are using? To check the version go to help > about Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 21.11.20039 installed. Go to Help > Check for Updates and reboot the computer once.

Also make sure the printer driver and firmware is version is up to date. Yo may also try to remove the printer driver and firmware and reboot the computer once and the reinstall it from the manufacturer's website.

Please try to repair the installation of Adobe Acrobat from the help menu (Windows only) and see if that makes any difference.

You may also try to reset the Acrobat preferences as described here https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-defau... and check.

Regards

Amal

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I updated Acrobat Reader to the most recent version and restarted my computer. That did not work.

The link for resetting the Acrobat preferences is from 2017! The directions for Mac don't make sense. The directions didn't match with my computer and I couldn't find any other the files it was saying to find.

The printer firmware is up to date and I restarted the printer. This also did not work.

Hi there

Please try to tutn off the protected mode for testing (Win Only) and see if that helps. Go to Edit > Preferences > Enhanced Security > Uncheck 'Enable protected mode at startup' Turn off the protected mode and Uncheck 'Enhanced Security' > Click OK and reboot the computer once.

Note: Please turn on the security after testing to avoid any security risk.

Regards

Amal

Amal,

That's a good suggestion for people that have Windows but in my original post I said that I'M ON A MAC ONLY RUNNING OS CATALINA VERSION 10.15.7. So please stop suggesting things that would work in windows. Thanks.

Also, I said that I had already tried that in my original post.

I would *eye roll* for HP's answer. The problem is, with the highest probability, their printer driver. Printer manufacturers don't put really a great effort into driver design on macOS. Foxit PDF Reader proves that the issue is not the application, as Foxit is not an Adobe company, but a third-party doing also a PDF Reader.

Printer manufacturers simply skip the OS interface and are doing all settings internally. That means that a program wanting to change a setting does not get through, as that program will use the OS provided API.

Ok, thank for the reply. So do you know how I can fix this?
