I think latest version of acrobat pro X 10.1.13 and adobe reader 11.0.10 have problem with embedded fonts.

If want to open a pdf with embedded font and i receive this message (sorry, translated by me from french)

"Impossible to extract the embedded font GILKAC+DIN-Regular. Some characters maybe display incorrectly or do not print well."

I have this problem on mac and Windows. Version 10.1.12 and 11.0.0 are ok and can open all these files.

Thanks for your help.

So hi Dov; any news yet?

Since there's some confusion as to the real problem which remains, namely accessing earlier created PDF's with Acrobat Pro and Reader, can I summarize what I would want to ask Adobe to fix - and I understand that that may not be simple, and sorry for my boldness, but I would really like a reaction to this:

- can a future update of Acrobat Pro and Reader have the sensitivity threshold for the corrupt DIN font lowered again to the level it was before the last update; in that case, earlier created PDF files can still be accessed and read?

- in that case, you could still keep the warning when such a font is detected in a document, but at least the PDF is not empty where the text should have been.

- or maybe is there a way to detect all instances of the font in the document with Acrobat or Reader and change them for another?

I understand this is far-fetched, and forgive me for my ignorance, being an Adobe-user and not an expert...

Would really appreciate any help!

We solved the problem for good by converting the DIN font files from otf to ttf format, using fontforge. the DIN ttf fonts doesn't cause problems anymore.

Yes anjag, that does solve the problem regarding the future creation of pdf's.

However, as we've stressed before: all our older work, which is stored in archives as part of contracts and building regulations and invoices and such, is still unreadable.

We cannot change those documents, and from now on, they are invalid. That is still a BIG problem, and it undermines our confidence in PDF as a reliable document.

For that we still need a solution.

A little Help for the time between Adobe helps us and now is to open the file with Apple "Vorschau" / viewer, if you work on Mac OSX... Maybe its also

possible with a Windows viewer program, which is not created by adobe...

Hello All,

unfortunately this discussion stoped without a final solution.

As I'am facing exactely the same trouble, the question still is left open:

Is there any solution for this issue found at Adobe?

What shall we do with our previously stored documents in our archives?

for me, the solution (as mentioned in an earlier reply) was converting the DIN font from opentype to truetype (i used cloudconvert dot com)

i removed the original opentype from my computer, reopened the software to verify it was no longer available, then installed the new truetype version. the original files re-opened exactly as they should and the error pop-up no longer appears in the resulting acrobat file.

This is also a problem for a very old music notation program, Score.   It embeds fonts into EPS files which then can be combined into PDFs, and recently the fonts have become changed in Adobe Reader to a substitute with different spacing and forms.     In this case there is no error or informational message, the font substitution happens without notice, but visually there are clear problems.

It is impossible to change how the notation program embeds the fonts, and it has worked for about 25 years, so something Adobe has done has caused the problem.

Hello,

and it also happens with the Helvetica Bold included with the Mac OS... It's actually happening to us on a form included in a PDF created from InDesign, and then the form added on Acrobat. Helvetica doesn't have any problem according to Font Book. But still getting that message : The font 'Helvetica,Bold' contains an invalid encoding. Some characters may not display.

Any help anyone?

Thanks!

Txiki

Thank you, Ironseth,

My version of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC is the last version. I can't have control on what version the final users have. Anyway, I get the 'Helvetica,Bold' contains an invalid enconding. And so do them. It used to work fine in the past, not anymore.

Can you post a sample file that demonstrates the problem? It could well be that the PDF is broken…or are you seeing this with many PDFs? If so, do they have something in common (eg. created by the same PDF producer)?

As I said, the PDFs are created with InDesign, no problem. The problem appears when adding a form on the PDFs with Adobe Acrobat DC Pro. All the enabled PDFs have the same problem. Checking Helvetica with Font Book doesn't give any error. Yes, a solution is changing to another typeface, like Arial. But it is like 100 enabled PDFs that I'm going to have to change...
