Retain page labels when combining multiple PDFs

Advocate ,
May 14, 2019 May 14, 2019

I have several PDFs that I have to combine into a single document. Each page of the PDF has a page label set which I need to retain.

I have tried several methods (create PDF from multiple, dragging pages from one to another, inserting pages from file), and it will screw up the page labels for the pages being inserted (it changes them to the same label as the page they are being inserted after)

Is there a way to merge multiple PDF documents and retain their page labels?

I haven't found any process to do this within the program, so I wrote a javascript to insert pages and reset the page labels after insert, and that works with just one issue, which I will bring up in the Javascript forum.

If anyone has a solution to this that doesn't involve Javascript, I'd still be interested in knowing.

Hi MarkWalsh,

Apologies for the delay in response, as you are experiencing the issue in combining the multiple pdf into a single file with retaining the page labels, we need some more information for a better understanding

  • What is the OS/version?
  • What is the application version? To check the version of the product please follow the link - Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC
  • What is the workflow you are using?
  • Could you please share the screenshots of the documents with the change in labels?
    To share the screenshot:
-Click on the insert icon provided in the reply window as shown below:

-An insert image window will appear.
-Click on the insert image and browse the location where you have saved the screenshot
-Select the file and click OK.

  • Have you tried the combine pdf tool in the toolbar?

Waiting for your reply

Regards,

Amal

I believe I've seen Try67 and Thom Parker  answer  similar questions before in these forums.

From reading their posts frequently  I can honestly affirm that this is their domain and you may want to try reaching out to them for a quicker answer. Meanwhile, don't forget to  provide the  feedback that MarkWalsh has suggested above.

Hi @Phyu

Hope you are doing well. Have you started experiencing this issue recently?

What is the version of the OS and Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 24.02.20687 installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also, try to repair the installation from the help menu (Win Only) and see if that works.

Please try to reset the Acrobat preferences as described here https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-defau... and check

I have the same issue. Each of my chapters has a section-based page numbering scheme, but when I combine the chapter files into a single PDF using Acrobat, all of the numbers revert to sequential integers.
