There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application

The adobe reader shows me this error: "There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application" when we are opening a pdf generated by another application. We checked that the pdf file was not read-only and no other software was using this pdf. It was strange because some PCs could open the file and some other couldn't, and after some period of time the file could be opened again. This happened usually on those files with more than 20 pages. We have searched on the Adobe website and without any solution can solving this issue. Only suggestion is using other viewer but it is not the user like to have.

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble.  as you are unable to open the PDF and getting the error 'There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application'

Would you mind sharing the workflow/steps you are doing to open the file? If the file is stored on a shared network/drive please download it to your computer first and then try to open it with Acrobat/Reader DC  and  check.

Also make sure you have the latest version of the application 21.05.20058 installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

You may also checkout the correct answer marked in a similar discussion https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat/acrobat-pro-dc-there-was-an-error-opening-this-document-the-f... and see if that helps.

I have this exact same issue with a client that support. When they an application to generate an adobe pdf they get 'There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application" Has been happening since the 9 Aug 2022 adobe DC reader update. Can an installer be provided that installs adobe without that update?

They are using the DC reader application, not the browser extension. Also Mcafee products were not installed when downloading adobe DC reader. I ask again...Can an installer be provided that installs adobe without the 9 August 2022 update?

Hi @jay26135574myvr

We are sorry to hear that. We need more information for a better understanding:

1. Would you mind sharing the workflow/steps the client is doing and the application he is using to generate the PDF file?

2. Is this an issue with a particular file or with all the files? Please try with a different file and check.

3. From where is the source file generated and what are the steps used to open the PDF file? Please try to open the PDF file in the web browser and Acrobat Reader DC and vice versa and observe the behavior.

4. Also, is it a stand-alone installation on the client machine or used as a deployment by IT?

We are here for help, just need more information.

Regards

Amal

going to answer by the numbers you provided:

PROGRAM: The business edge

1. they select a file and given option like print,adobe-->they select adobe-->PDF opens in adobe-->the error happens.

2. happens with ALL files

3. source is The Business Edge program -->PDF opens in the browser, not in adobe

4. standalone, I downloaded from adobe website and installed in on the workstation

Hi @jay26135574myvr

Please try to create the PDF via the Acrobat Pro DC application and see if that helps.

Also, please share the sample PDF file exhibiting the issue so that we can check it and try to reproduce the issue on our end.

They do not pay for adobe pro, they use the DC reader, the free version...I can see about getting a PDF generated that we can provide to you.
