Hello!
I have a problem with Reader extending my forms.
Since yesterday when i try to reader extend any pdf forms on my pc i get the message 'This document could not be Reader enabled'. Does not matter what file i try to reader extend i get the same message.
Any idea why this is happening?
I am using Acrobat pro 2017.

Bottom line: something expired, you need to upgrade. There is no fix for Acrobat 2017.
HOWEVER, please test whether you still need to reader extend at all. Recent versions of Reader may not need you to do it at all.

Installed a trial Adobe pro 2022 and it indeed solves the problem. So it seems older versions of adobe pro with perpetual license cannot reader extend anymore since 7 jan 2023

Unfortunately, CC doesn't know and doesn't update Acrobat. Acrobat updates itself. Try using Help > Check for updates.
https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-extended-pdfs-and-adobe-root-ca-expiry.html says "With the November 2022 release of Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader, Adobe has updated the applications..."
The update in November 2022 was 22.003.20282 (Win), 22.003.20281 (Mac). So any version since then should be ok. 2022.001.20112 is older.
Also, double check whether you still need to Reader Enable. Recent versions of Acrobat Reader no longer need this for saving PDF forms made in Acrobat, but many of us kept doing it out of habit (and because Acrobat never told us not to).

Hi,
If this is a document that was converted to a PDF from another software using Adobe Acrobat Pro, can you confirm which software was originally used to produce the PDF ? (For example, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. Or if the PDF was produced using Print to PDF with a printing device driver other than the Adobe PDF Maker).

The forms were created a long time ago starting from word files and using convert to pdf function in Acrobat pro 2017.

Makes sense. So the question that remains is what do i need to upgrade to be able to benefit of this reader extended function again?

Acrobat Pro subscription, it seems to me. POSSIBLY Acrobat Pro 2020 upgrade, but I can't recommend perpetual license versions 2020 is already well out of date.

I am encountering the same issue, except I am using Adobe Acrobat XI Pro (11.0.23), and the updater assures me that no updates are available. How do we restore this functionality, please?

Didn'tEatHisGreens, https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-extended-pdfs-and-adobe-root-ca-expiry.html makes it clear there is only an update for Acrobat Pro DC. There will never be any updates for Acrobat XI, since it is out of support. 11.0.23 was the last. So to restore the functionality you need an up to date subscription to Acrobat DC.

I just used "help" --> "check for updates" and the dialog box said it was fully up to date. I will place an order for DC. Thank you.

You don't really need it any longer, unless the users will open the file in a very old version of Reader. The current version can save in form fields, add comments, etc., even without those rights.

Fill and save is not available without Enabling in Adobe Acrobat Reader (22.003.20282), which appears to be the latest version.

My users are using version 2021.001.20155 for Adobe Pro DC. And I don't see any check for updates options. Would we need to download and package a new version?
Thanks

A new version may not fix it. I'm running the latest version of Acrobat Pro DC, and I'm still getting this:
I don't have the luxury of assuming everyone who uses my forms has the the very latest version of Reader, and in fact the feedback I get is the opposite. And even having an Adobe tech remotely accessing my computer and reinstalling Pro DC twice made zero difference - still won't save Reader Extended forms.

I am having the same issue, I created the form using Adobe Experience Manager - Froms, version 6.4.0.20180228.1.932123 and am trying to use Adobe Pro version 2022.003.20258 to get to save the form using Reader extended forms without success. Any help would be appreciated.

2022.003.20258 is too old according to https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-extended-pdfs-and-adobe-root-ca-expiry.html . Update.

I am running Acrobat DC, under a creative cloud account. Creative cloud says I am up to date. I created a reader enabled PDF yesterday, today after making changes, I cannot save as reader extended. any thoughts?

Dawnwise, Creative Cloud is often completely wrong about whether an app is up to date, especially for Acrobat. What actual version is Acrobat - something like 2016.123.98765?

I am running Big Sur on a 2019 Macbook Pro. I also have updated all of my CC programs this week. When I try to save a PDF as reader extended > enable more tools (includes form fill-in... I get the error message: "This document could not be Reader Enabled." Anyone have a fix?
