Unable to open PDFs saved in a newer version of Acrobat Reader using Acrobat Reader 9

Good day Adobe Community,

In the most recent of times we found that we are unfortunately unable to open PDF documents saved in the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, using Adobe Acrobat 9 as we obtain a message/notification that states that the files require a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to open. Is there anyway we could overcome this issue? as some PDF's created/saved in the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader are still able to open using Acrobat 9.

Any advise and assistaince in this regard, will be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Thato Phatedi

Might they be PDF Portfolios with the Flash interface?  We'll need to know as many details as possible about your files, if the issue is unique to just PDFs from a single source, if just your computer has this issue, but officemates (of course making an assumption) with the same software do not have the issue, etc.  Tell us all you can - we'll collectively try to help!

My best,

Dave

Good day Dave_M,

Thank you for your feedback, it is much appreciated.

As I was taking screenshots of the error as well as the properties seen in the PDF documents that are able to open in Acrobat 9 and those that cannot - I then found that those PDF's that cannot open in Acrobat 9 are unfortunately unable to open as they are set to be opened by Acrobat X or later. Please note that I will proceed to verify how the files thereof are saved by users as once this is determined, all will be in order.

Kidn Regards

It does sound as if you are reading "Acrobat X or later" from the document security section, perhaps? If so, then document security must be set, in actuality.

There is no reason why a PDF saved with Acrobat Reader cannot be opened with Acrobat Pro 9.

Acrobat (Pro, Standard and Reader) versions 9, 10, 11 and DC use by default the same version of the PDF format: 1.6, and can also all use version 1.7

In addition, you cannot protect a PDF with Acrobat Reader.

So my question is: what does "newer version of Acrobat Reader" really mean?

Can you give us the exact name and version of the software you are using, or a screenshot?
