When I try to combine documents I keep getting an error that says: merged document will no longer comply with ISO 19005

What this means is that one or more of the files that you are trying to combine have been created to the ISO 19005 standard which is PDF/A. PDF/A is a method that ensures that a PDF file will be able to be opened indefinitely into the future. PDF/A means PDF - Archival. You're getting that message because some of the files do not comply with this standard while others do and it's letting you know that the resulting file will no longer comply to this standard due to the non-compliant PDF/A files that are being included.

Ok so what does that mean for combining the documents? What are the consequences and solutions aorund this?

Yes, I would love a resolution too. Never seen this before.

Solution: Make each individual PDF compliant with the PDF/A ISO 19005 standard, and then merge the two.
You might have to return to the source files (ie, Word or PowerPoint) and re-export to the PDF/A standard to create the individual compliant files.
Here's some background info about PDF/A:

Or just combine the PDFs as they are and then save the resulting PDF as PDF/A again.

Does this work, though, if it is PDF/A-1a? Because merging tagged documents is rarely a happy experience for the tags.
