Windows 10 Print to PDF Error: findfont /courier

Convidado
Feb 13, 2020 Feb 13, 2020

Recieving an error when attempting to print as PDF:

%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: findfont ]%%

Stack:
/Font
(Courier)
/courier

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

I have attempted the following....

- Confirmed Courier is isntalled in Windows\fonts (and added as resourse)

- Uninstalled/reinstall adobe Professional

- Changed font settings and folders used to locate fonts

- Start Acrobat Distiller and select "Font locations" within its "Settings" menu. Remove all the font folders listed there, except for the one that points to a subfolder called "/Resource/Font"

- Unchecked "rely on system fonts"

none of which seems to resolve the issue for me. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

OK - I deleted all the printers as you suggested, made sure that all the Courrier fonts appeared in both the Adobe and Windows directories, then restarted the pc and re-installed the Adobe printer. I tried using this printer to output a pdf from AutoCAD, Quickbooks, MathCAD as well as MS Office applications. None of these documents contain Corrier Fonts yet the PDFs could not be generated and the same log file contents appeared each time:

%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: findfont ]%%

Stack:
/Font
(Courier)
/courier

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

I've now had to re-install Microsoft Print to PDF and Microsoft XPS Document writer (so that Quickbooks software could work) and, in view of the lack of success in getting the Adobe printer to work, I've made the "Microsoft Print to PDF" the default printer.

I also looked at the possibility of restoring Windows to an earlier restore point but only one was listed (when I deleted Acrobat Pro 2017 and installed the 2020 version.

I'm not giving up but I do need the present work-around for routine functionality.

I am appreciative of all your help but very disappointed that I have been unable to recover the Adobe printer functionality.

I'm sorry to read that. I think we have done extensive research and try long and hard enough.

I can only think that maybe, just maybe... as one last troubleshooting step, is to stop and restart the printer spooling service:

One last though:

The courier font issue may not be in the Acrobat's distilling capabilities. It may be possible and very common that, if another program  produces a PDF, it may be necessary to manually embedd OpenType fonts, or subset embedded fonts.

The "PDF fonts" link that I appended at the end of this thread for you explicitely states:

  •

    Font embedding and substitution
A font can be embedded only if it contains a setting by the font vendor that permits it to be embedded. Embedding prevents font substitution when readers view or print the file, and ensures that readers see the text in its original font. Embedding increases file size only slightly, unless the document uses CID fonts. a font format commonly used for Asian languages. You can embed or substitute fonts in Acrobat or when you export an InDesign document to PDF.

You can embed the entire font, or just a subset of the characters used in the file. Subsetting ensures that your fonts and font metrics are used at print time by creating a custom font name. That way, for example, your version of Adobe Garamond®, not your service provider’s version, can always be used by the service provider for viewing and printing. Type 1 and TrueType fonts can be embedded if they are included in the PostScript file, or are available in one of the font locations that Distiller monitors and are not restricted from embedding.

When a font cannot be embedded because of the font vendor’s settings, and someone who opens or prints a PDF does not have access to the original font, a Multiple Master typeface is temporarily substituted: AdobeSerifMM for a missing serif font, and AdobeSansMM for a missing sans serif font."

Worst case scenario, sometimes you'll need to recreate a document from scratch, and in other instances, You still may be able to work around similar issues by customizing your own presets using the preferences shown in my slide below:

But in any case, after researching a little more on the web, I think that everything is a lot more easily explained in the links below:
