How do you hide multiple linked pages in a PDF to show only the 1st page but navigate to other pages when link is selected after it has been uploaded to a website?

You can create a multi-layer file in InDesign, adding the additional "pages" to each layer. Open the PDF in Acrobat and select Layers view, assign actions to the buttons to navigate to the layers.

After re-reading your post, I realized you wanted the buttons to work in a browser, and I'm not sure my suggestion would work. You might want to have a look at the InDesign Publish Online feature.
