When you say that the “PDF made in Acrobat 9 will not open when e-mailed” exactly what do you mean? What does the recipient of the PDF file see? An error message from Adobe Reader or Acrobat? Nothing happens? What?

Does the PDF file open on the systems on which the PDF file is (1) created and (2) being mailed from? There is nothing about PDF files made in older versions of Acrobat that could or would not allow them to be e-mailed. E-mailing a PDF file as an attachment is not in any way dependent upon the version of Acrobat that created it and doesn't require installation of same to send or forward such an e-mail. It doesn't sound like a newer version of Acrobat would help you at all!

More information please and maybe we can better assist you.

Try to answer as well as Possible.  I have only used Acrobat 9 to make PDF's. Never made them on any previous version. If I email to myself to see what I'm sending, I get a notice that I must upgrade my reader to 5 or above or no download will happen.  When i 'play the game' and let Adobe update, It will start, then say I have a much better reader already installed.and quit.I am using Reader 11.0.by the way, I can see that it is downloading because the download says it contains about 7 mgs if info. If I send the download to someone who has Acrobat on their machine, it will default automatically use Acrobat that to download.(Not that way, however, on my computer)  They have no problem.  My problem is that 99% of my people do Not have Acrobat, only the Reader, like billions of other people. I have uninstalled acrobat and the reader several times. I have installed Acrobat Pro DC. It makes a terrible Portfolio that is un editable and Very Amaturish in design.Looks like an 8th grade class project- I give them a C. (I'm told by the Adobe tech people that DC and the Portfolio maker are not compatible...they're right!). So I have uninstalled Acrobat DC, reinstalled Acrobat 9. It makes a great Portfolio that I cant send to anybody without Acrobat on their computer! Sent out a portfolio to a few people they get this: They say after they x out the box the program opens...They say after they x out the box the program opens...with no need to download.  I'm beginning to think this is something only on my machine. Any help is greatly appreciated.  Happy to answer any othe r questions.   Thanks again

Please give us the exact. complete words of the message you summarise as , "I get a notice that I must upgrade my reader to 5 or above or no download will happen. "

I'm going to guess it actually says something like "To view this file correctly..."

If so, you've made a file that works only in Reader. Only Safari on some systems uses Reader. Mail apps and other browsers don't. Don't use portfolios if you don't want to force people to download.

The message is misleading. Read it as this instead: "This PDF can be viewed only using Acrobat Reader ... or above. Your browser or app is no using Acrobat Reader. Download the file and open in Reader".

What do you mean by "wants Reader 5 or better"? If you get a message, please tell us exactly, or better still a screen shot (BUT DO NOT EMAIL IT!!)
