Question

We use excel to create flow charts that contain charts and numbers. We want to enlarge the page to print on 24x36 inch paper. Office Depot suggested using a PDF file. Need guidance on what Adobe program would be best to use. Can you help??

If you are on a mac, you can use the built-in print to PDF feature.

Here's how I would tackle the process (I am on a mac). I would:

  • In Excel: Print to PDF using the built-in functionality of the MAC OS
  • In Adobe Indesign, make a new 24x36" document.
  • Place the PDF I made into the document and enlarge to fill the whole page.
  • Export a PDF from InDesign and send that to the printer

Bu honestly, if you go to a real print shop (like an AlphaGraphics, or perhaps a minuteman press) they can do the conversion for you. Also complicating the process is that you want to enlarge the document to print on a much larger page size... To actually supply Office Depot with a 24x36 PDF is another step in the process.

A conversion like this is very simple for someone with the know-how and tools to do it. But if you're lacking other one of those, it can be a very frustrating and time consuming (expensive) process. A designer or real print shop will already have to the programs needed.

You would need either Adobe Acrobat (not Adobe Acrobat Reader), or a subscription to the CreatePDF online service to generate PDF files from Excel documents. However, I'm not sure you really need it. What's stopping you from just printing to that paper size using Excel?
