Let's be specific. You can update to the latest update to version 11 (XI) for free. You can't update to the current version, DC, at all. You'd have to buy it. If you upgrade Office again there's no chance XI will be updated for you. If you have one app that auto updates on subscription , they probably all should be.

You could ask Techsoup why they sold you something a year out of date, but perhaps that's what they do. (Update: I see they offer both, but the Acrobat DC offering is a discounted subscription for a year).

This is the one we just purchased yesterday through techsoup with a non profit discount

Acrobat XI Pro Win ESD (Int'l English)

Wouldn't it be the most up to date version?

So, it should just appear as a ribbon once downloaded?

Maybe I did something wrong?

Acrobat XI is obsolete. It's more than a year since it was superseded. HOWEVER Adobe still make updates. Never assume a new purchase is up to date, often CDs are years old.
