Why does Safari crash when our users try to open a Document Cloud PDF?

When we try to open a pdf that was saved in the Adobe document cloud using Safari, it starts to open, the document's first page is displayed for about 3/4 of a second, and then it goes blank and we get this error:

It's a report for Apple. No Adobe software is involved in the crash, Safari, including any PDF viewer, is all made by Apple.

You can check for updates, provided you aren't on an ancient version of macOS (ancient, in this case, is Big Sur or older).

I understand this is a problem with Safari. I was just hoping to find out if anybody else had had this issue and was able to solve it. Obviously Apple is not going to be of any assistance.

  1. Outdated Safari version: Ensure that Safari is up to date with the latest version. Older versions of Safari may have compatibility issues with certain websites or plugins, including Document Cloud. Update Safari to the latest version available and see if the issue persists.

  2. PDF plugin or extension conflict: Safari relies on plugins or extensions to handle PDF files. It's possible that a conflicting or outdated plugin is causing the crash. Try disabling any PDF-related plugins or extensions in Safari's preferences or test the PDF opening in Safari's private browsing mode, which disables extensions by default.

  3. Corrupted PDF file: The specific PDF file being opened in Document Cloud may be corrupted or improperly formatted, causing Safari to crash. Try opening different PDF files in Document Cloud to see if the issue occurs consistently or if it's specific to certain files. If it's limited to a specific file, you may need to recreate or obtain a new copy of the PDF.

  4. Insufficient system resources: Safari crashing could be related to insufficient system resources, such as low memory or high CPU usage. Check the resource usage on your device, close unnecessary applications or browser tabs, and try opening the PDF file again to see if the crash persists.

  5. Clear cache and website data: Cached data or temporary files stored by Safari may cause conflicts when accessing Document Cloud. Clearing the browser cache and website data can help resolve such issues. Go to Safari preferences, navigate to the "Privacy" tab, and click on "Manage Website Data." Find the entry for Document Cloud or Adobe-related sites and remove it.
