Cross-Product Creative Challenge #9: Mixing live action and cartoons!

Community Expert ,
Nov 18, 2025 Nov 18, 2025

Welcome to the Cross-Product Creative Challenge! Thanks to everyone who participated in the Paleolithic Gallery challenge. Now we're mixing photography and cartoons.

The Challenge:
Create a movie still in which a cartoon character or several interact with character(s) in a real-world photograph. You don't have to make a video, although you can if you want. We're looking for a still that tells a story, like the example below. The cartoon elements can come from Firefly or Illustrator or Photoshop, your choice.

Guidelines:

  • A prompt is not enough. Layer your assets and refine your composition. Treat Firefly as a collaborator, not a shortcut. Use prompts to generate characters. Try out Gemini 2.5 Flash or other partner models.
  • Think like a director. What’s the story here? Who are the characters? What's happening in the scene?
  • It’s a Cross-Product Challenge! Don't do it all in Firefly. Use Photoshop, Illustrator, Substance, Adobe Express—whatever tools will help you build the scene.
  • Share your process. Tell us how you created it. What tools did you use? How did you refine your idea? What choices did you make?

Started with the Homer image below.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer_Simpson#/media/File:Homer_Simpson_2006.png
Used Firefly with Gemini model to create different versions of homers. Selected a few, composed in Photoshop. Then back to Firefly with Gemini to get the background, then back to Photoshop.

Here are 2 versions.

I love the first one, where the lighting is all in sync. Great concept, with a vaguely Darwinian vibe!

Thanks @AlanGilbertson. I also like the first one too. Both are not perfect shadow wise and the Homers are a bit out of proportion but like the overall look and feel of them šŸ™‚

Who Scammed Rocky Raccoon?
A dark comedy/animation/fantasy set in 1950s Los Angeles, blending live-action and animation in a film noir mystery where hard-boiled detective Rex Murdock helps cartoon superstar Rocky Raccoon out of a tough jam. This technical marvel has seamless human-cartoon interactions, complex themes of greed and prejudice combined with the classic "Parental Bonus" of witty, adult-oriented humor hidden in double entendres and layered jokes, making it a classic for both older kids and adults.

AppsApps
A wide variety of apps were used to create this. This includes but is not limited to:
ChatGPT for brainstorming, planning, etc.
Gemini 3 (Nano Banana Pro) for generating image assets.
Adobe Firefly for generating image assets.
Adobe Photoshop for image compositing and layout development.
Adobe Illustrator for logo design and vector art creation.
Netflix for inspiration and so I could recreate the fake UI and show card.

Describing the entire process would take way too long but suffice it to say I developed the assets using many tools, technologies and sources and then combined them together to make the office scene. After I had the office scene completed, I created the Netflix layout. The instructions for this challenge said: create a single image that makes us ask, ā€œWait — is that real?ā€ Thus, I tried to make it appear as if this were a real show that someone could watch on Netflix.

What do you think?

We can always rely on you for a totally brilliant treatment, Mr. H! The movie allusions are wonderful.

Were you experimenting with Turntable in Illustrator? Great use for that feature, if so.

Thanks, Alan! I do my best!

Just riffing on "Roger Rabbit" if it wasn't obvious. I always loved that movie and the concept.

I didn't use turntable for this. I don't think it would work in this instance; I needed to maintain consistency in style for both animated characters. Cool idea though. In designing the characters, I built 360 turn-arounds of each one. Once I have full-body views from each angle, I can pose them (almost) however I like. It's really about having enough information to inform the AI, so it doesn't drift. I can create all of the stock I need for a scene. Then it's just a matter of assembling everything in Photoshop.

Cheers!

Magnificent bit of work, as usual. I totally caught the Roger Rabbit allusion (hard to miss!), and yeah, I love that movie.

Yes! Fellow Roger Rabbit fans! I had heard recently that they are working on a proper follow-up to that film. Not a reboot, but an actual sequel now that the original creator has regained the rights back from Disney.

BEFORE/AFTER

Tools Used: Firefly (cartoon cat design), Illustrator (linework refinement), Photoshop (compositing + lighting + cleanup), Camera Raw (final grading), and my own cafƩ photo as the real-world base. I adjusted warmth and shadows to blend the cat naturally and create a soft, cinematic vibe.

With the last season of Stranger Things coming out I wanted to honor a well-done scene from last season with a cartoonish distortion. In firefly I stylized a painting version of the foreground subject Will and used that as inspiration for a real-life painting. I then captured and transferred that painting to Photoshop and used the polygonal lasso to remove the background, before underlaying the picture from the real scene and outlining it with the brush tool to create a further cartoonish feel. Finally I added a posterize adjustment layer.
