Chinese researchers have developed a new cathode material aimed at increasing the cycle life of all-solid-state lithium batteries, enhancing their commercial viability. The research was published in the journal Nature Energy, where the research team from Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy explained that all-solid-state lithium batteries are less prone to leakage and combustion compared to traditional liquid lithium batteries.

The new material features high electronic and ionic conductivity, a high specific discharge capacity, minimal volume change, and high energy density, making it safer and more efficient than previous materials. Additionally, the new material retains 80% of its original capacity after 5000 charge and discharge cycles, with an energy density of up to 390 watt-hours per kilogram.

All-solid-state lithium batteries represent a new generation of energy storage technology and could contribute to achieving China’s strategic goals related to green transformation. The team plans to produce the material on a large scale within two to three years, focusing on reducing costs by using silicon instead of germanium. They also intend to explore recycling these batteries in the future
