INT. DETECTIVE'S OFFICE - DAY
Detective MAXWELL, a bumbling but well-intentioned detective, sits at his cluttered desk. He wears a disheveled trench coat and a magnifying glass hangs around his neck.
MAXWELL
(to himself)
Alright, time to solve some crimes!
Maxwell picks up a ringing phone.
MAXWELL (CONT'D)
Detective Maxwell here. How can I assist you?
CALLER (V.O.)
(into the phone)
Detective, my cat has gone missing!
MAXWELL
Don't worry, ma'am. I'll find your cat in no time. What's its name?
CALLER (V.O.)
It's Mr. Whiskers.
MAXWELL
(noting it down)
Alright, Mr. Whiskers it is. I'll be right there!
Maxwell jumps up from his desk, knocking over a stack of papers.
CUT TO:
EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY
Maxwell arrives at the caller's house. He rings the doorbell.
CALLER, a worried WOMAN, opens the door.
CALLER
Thank goodness you're here, Detective! Please find Mr. Whiskers!
MAXWELL
(determined)
Fear not, ma'am. Detective Maxwell never fails!
Maxwell steps inside the house, but as soon as he does, he forgets why he's there.
MAXWELL (CONT'D)
(looking puzzled)
Why am I here again?
CALLER
(concerned)
To find Mr. Whiskers, Detective. Remember?
MAXWELL
(smirking)
Of course, how could I forget?
Maxwell searches the house, opening random cupboards, and knocking over vases in his quest to find the missing cat. He even mistakes a stuffed toy for Mr. Whiskers.
MAXWELL (CONT'D)
(excited)
Found him!
CALLER
(disappointed)
That's just a toy, Detective.
MAXWELL
(slightly embarrassed)
Right, right. I knew that!
Maxwell continues his search, oblivious to the chaos he's causing. He accidentally spills a bowl of cat food on the floor.
MAXWELL (CONT'D)
(looking proud)
I found the evidence!
CALLER
(sighs)
Detective, that's cat food. It's for Mr. Whiskers to eat.
MAXWELL
(smiling)
Oh, right. Well, at least he won't go hungry!
CUT TO:
EXT. BACKYARD - DAY
Maxwell and the Caller search the backyard, calling out for Mr. Whiskers.
MAXWELL
(shouting)
Here, kitty kitty! Where are you, Mr. Whiskers?
Suddenly, Maxwell spots a squirrel in a tree.
MAXWELL (CONT'D)
(excitedly)
There he is! The culprit!
CALLER
(laughing)
Detective, that's a squirrel. We're looking for a cat!
MAXWELL
(realizing his mistake)
Oh, right. My apologies to the squirrel!
They continue searching until Maxwell spots the real Mr. Whiskers, sitting on a tree branch.
MAXWELL (CONT'D)
(excited)
There he is! I found him!
Maxwell reaches up to grab the cat but accidentally knocks a bird's nest onto his head.
BIRDS (V.O.)
(chirping angrily)
MAXWELL
(startled)
Oh no! I've upset the bird community!
CALLER
(laughing)
Detective Maxwell, let me handle it. You just focus on Mr. Whiskers.
