एक छोटे से गाँव में एक गरीब लकड़हारा रहता था। वह दिनभर जंगल में लकड़ियाँ काटकर उन्हें बाजार में बेचता और अपनी जीविका चलाता था। एक दिन वह नदी के किनारे पेड़ काट रहा था, तभी गलती से उसकी कुल्हाड़ी नदी में गिर गई।

लकड़हारा बहुत दुखी हुआ क्योंकि कुल्हाड़ी के बिना उसका गुजारा नहीं हो सकता था। वह नदी के किनारे बैठकर रोने लगा। तभी नदी से एक देवता प्रकट हुए। उन्होंने लकड़हारे से पूछा, "तुम क्यों रो रहे हो?"

लकड़हारे ने ईमानदारी से जवाब दिया, "मेरी कुल्हाड़ी नदी में गिर गई है। मैं बहुत गरीब हूँ और नई कुल्हाड़ी खरीदने के लिए मेरे पास पैसे नहीं हैं।"

देवता मुस्कुराए और नदी में जाकर सोने की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर आए। उन्होंने लकड़हारे से पूछा, "क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है?"

लकड़हारे ने ईमानदारी से कहा, "नहीं, यह मेरी कुल्हाड़ी नहीं है।"

फिर देवता ने चाँदी की कुल्हाड़ी निकाली और पूछा, "क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है?"

लकड़हारे ने फिर मना कर दिया।

आखिर में, देवता ने उसकी पुरानी लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी निकालकर दी। लकड़हारा खुशी से बोला, "हाँ, यही मेरी कुल्हाड़ी है!"

देवता उसकी ईमानदारी से प्रसन्न हुए और इनाम के रूप में उसे तीनों कुल्हाड़ियाँ दे दीं। लकड़हारा बहुत खुश हुआ और ईमानदारी के इनाम को स्वीकार कर लिया।

शिक्षा:

ईमानदारी का फल हमेशा मीठा होता है। सत्य और ईमानदारी का रास्ता कठिन जरूर हो सकता है, लेकिन अंत में उसका फल अवश्य मिलता है।
