Adobe XD's text box bugs

New Here ,
Nov 09, 2022 Nov 09, 2022

Hello and sorry if this has been posted again.
But this is a persistent and old problem...

Annoying Adobe XD bug that is still active after lots of versions:

In relatively large documents, with many artboards and images, randomly, when double clicking at least point type text boxes, there isn't a selection background, you can't see what is selected. And also, you can't type in anything. Click another text box may lead to similar results. From that point onward, the best solution would be to close Adobe XD and reopen it.

This may happen an hour after opening a file, or half an hour, or less, or more, or not happen. It doesn't necessarily happen daily (but it may happen more times a day). But it definitely happens often enough that is not a once-in-a-month problem.

A variation of this is that text boxes sometimes can only be unselected (and lose focus) by using the Esc key. Clicking outside them, when they're active for editing the text inside, doesn't work.

Another very annoying thing is that you can't scale a text box, unless it is point type (area type can't be resized proportionally, while also resizing the text within it).

For clarification, I refer to when creating/editing an XD file, not when using prototypes or something else.

This happens on Windows 11, happened on Windows 10 too (probably nothing to do with the Windows version, nor with the Adobe XD version).

Thank you!

Hey there. It is indeed an old issue, one which I personally don't think will ever be fixed, as Adobe has said it's a Windows / Microsoft problem which needs to be fixed by them. With Adobe's move to acquire Figma, I doubt this fix will be a priority and we still don't know how things will be moving forward after the acquisition.

Your fastest fix is Alt+Tab to a different window and back to Xd. You don't have to restart it.

Thanks again for this incredibly simple (Alt + Tab) tip, that has transformed literally the usefulness of Xd, and has made it very usable.

Though Xd is fast to start and to work in (unlike Illustrator, for instance), the text box bug happens so, so often, that it was very annoying to close and open Xd everytime (and though it starts fast, if you have a huge file by the number of artboards and assetts, it takes a few good seconds to open it).

Another textbox-related issue:

I create a text box, enter a text in it that conains both paragraphs (I press Enter), and forced line breaks (I press Shift-Enter). And then I go on to specify Paragraph Spacing (spacing after a paragraph), I enter a value.

While the text box is active, and the typing cursor is there, things look great, as they should (i.e., the paragraph spacing value is beautifully applied to the paragraph endings; and not to the forced line breaks). As soon as I commit the textbox, and click outside, bad things happen. I.e., the paragraph spacing is applied to all lines of text, regardless of their type (end of paragraphs, or line breaks). If a click again to edit text, it all looks correct while editing.

Yeah, I can reproduce this one. Xd treats paragraphs and line breaks the same way when you stop editing the text element. Xd's text engine is pretty bad 🙂 Not sure if this bug in particular has been discussed, maybe it has. I know users have posted about differences between the text while editing and after.

It will be useful if you can record a video of the issue, so a bug can be filed for it, assuming it isn't already a known issue for the team.
