Can't see the option Overlay

Explorer ,
Oct 16, 2018 Oct 16, 2018

Hello,

I'm starting using XD today on Windows 10. I ust saw the video about the recent overlay function, and now the product sound more useful to me.

The problem is that when I select a button, and drag it to the menu, the option I see are:

  • Trigger
  • Action
  • Destination
  • Animation

I've tried uninstalling and installing it again to be sure about the version. But still the same. Seems I'm missing something because couldn't find anyone in google with the same problem,

This is how the options should show up according to the demo:

Thanks in advance for the help

Cheers!

You should have it under "action".

you are right! it's under actions.
thanks a lot!
My question now is why it's different to the demo? It's because I'm using XD on Windows?

For me it's the same, and I use Mac. I think they changed it in the recent update.

Thanks for the info!

I can't understand why Adobe publish videos that doesn't match the software they produce... amazing!

You are talking about the company that added useless voice control, and still can't add color management profile for over 2 years (colors are too saturated in XD compared to browser/photoshop/illustrator). Why are you surprised?

you are right! I still remember when they've launched the CS3 option, with a lot of really cool improvements, and they claim "instead of thinking what to add, we have asked our users". That was the last time they did that! Now seems the Adobe developers are thinking the improvements on a software that they've never used in their lives.

Yes, its a real mystery why they add useless things like spelling and voice control to an app which is meant to make prototypes in, when you still can't copy a character asset from one project to another and the prototypes still scale if you shrink you browser window instead of showing the content in 100% like any real website...

As I said in another comment, instead of asking the users what would be useful for us, they let the developers to decide what to do. Of course, for them the voice recognition is cool, beacause they can play with it.

Would be nice if Adobe start asking the users again what we want, and do it quickly.

Some of the "great improvements" thwy have anounced lattely are things that should have been there 10 years ago!

Hi, folks-

I want to be very clear about this: we do prioritize the features that we release, and many of these features are prioritized according to what the community has asked for, both in person and through UserVoice. We are frequently reading and updating the database (just like we frequently read through the forums), and it's a good place for your voice to be heard. We talk to thousands (if not tens of thousands) of designers a year around the world and aggregate all that feedback.

That being said, I want to address the other frustration in here: we know that there are features that you desperately want and do have many of them on our roadmap. Just because you think something is useless doesn't mean that others feel the same way, and we are constantly talking to people to see what improvements would make the most impact on their lives.

Voice came out of a deep analysis of the industry at large and recognizing that these types of interactions are quickly becoming the norm. You can read more about the rationale behind that here: October 2018 Release of Adobe XD: Voice-Based Prototypes and More Unveiled at Adobe MAX | Adobe Blog. My colleague Khoi also wrote this thought piece on it as well: https://www.subtraction.com/2018/10/15/designing-and-prototyping-with-voice-in-adobe-xd/

Also, I want to point out that engineers don't just "decide whatever." Regardless of whether or not you agree with it, our features are mapped out and thoughtfully designed by a passionate, curious, industry-leading team of product managers, designers, and developers.

Regarding the videos being out of sync: we release monthly, and it's very likely you saw an older video. There's probably something in there about keeping the videos in sync (and purging old videos), but we can only control the content that we produce, not a tutorial that someone else from the community created. Our text documentation should remain in sync with the current release. Adobe XD CC Learn & Support

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your answer.

Really appreciate your explanation.

I think everybody agrees that the menu bar it’s a more than obvious feature that any prototype software (even the free ones) have. The first time I’ve tried XD, I spent lots of hours trying to figure it out how to do a menu with XD. Couldn’t believe that something so basic was missing.

It’s great that Adobe think in technology that it’s becoming more important in the market, but in the meantime, most of the Adobe CC won’t use XD just because hasn’t a basic feature that is part of the present and the future (for at least a few years) of the everyday work.

If Adobe doesn’t provide the basic features to XD, will have the same future than Adobe Muse had.

Specifically speaking about the voice feature, there are many reasons to don’t spend more time in it:

-XD is a software to create prototypes, not to create software itself.

-The voice recognition it’s becoming more important? Absolutely YES, but mostly in interfaces that has no screen (Amazon Echo, Google home, etc). Maybe the interfaces for cars, or something similar, but it’s a tiny fraction of the design market.

-The voice recognition engine used in XD it’s not a standard one (Google or Apple), so whatever test we can do on a prototype made with XD not necessarily will work well on the real software.

I hope the Adobe team think in spend a little effort in provide ASAP a function that is basic and it’s in ALL the prototype design software (free and premium) instead of using time in features that is pretty useless in a prototype software.

And about the video explaining the overlay feature, sorry to say it, but it’s a content made by adobe and it’s in the official youtube channel since June 19th 2018

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cpz2OIHYvw

I guess with 14.000 employees, Adobe could put one person only to prepare an mantain the videos on their youtube channel.

I’m working with adobe products since 1989, almost 30 years!! And I saw Adobe succeeding and failing with lots of products. XD it’s a really good idea, but after a couple of years in the market, and the way that the team is thinking about the product, I think most of the designers will keep working with other options in the market and will sadly sink like many other products.

Hope you take this as a constructive critic.

Kind regards.
