Changing the color behind a photo?

I created a grid with a fill of white. Then I dropped photos into the grid. They automatically sized to the boxes, but the photos were too large. I scaled them smaller, but then was left with a grey area around the photo. Is there a way to fill the extra space left over by making a photo smaller with white?

Can you just place a white box behind the photo? (Not sure if I understood you correctly )

I think the actual shape u used ends with white color. u can make the white shape bigger (the blue line it's just because of image select)

    or u can try :
    1- Create shape

2- Drag and drop the image inside a shape

3- U can create a new shape with color u want behind the image

May be it can depend on file format, Transparency and Matt color. Which format use your image?

Looks like the gray background is because of the artboard color. I would go with the above suggestion if that's possible.

    Thanks,

Can you share project? it difficult to say . I try to reproduce your steps... but have white background.

How you create your grid? Did you place one image and then convert it into grid?
