How to fix the Overlay issue?

I'm aware of the limitations of making rollover states, so I've done multiple overlays to demo a webpage. (Mov. file attached.) You can see, as the select button is clicked on, there's a brief flash of "select" beneath the checkmark of previous selections. How do I fix this? Thanks!
