Weird development - what's up with the underline?!

Okay so we wanted underline (not too much to ask really is it!?)

We got underline (hurrah!)

The underline is broken in descenders... and there's no way of turning this off. Why not? it's not like there's no room for a button? you could just make the underline button have 3 states (off, on, broken) if UI space is a concern. Lucky for me i like the broken underline!

What's more, here is the demonstration image:

So either there was a regression, or the person that made that demonstration image flat out faked it!
I appreciate this is the way the web works, and the way it's expected to work, but still.
