I cannot install Adobe AIR on my Android phone (v. 2.2.1)
I search for "Adobe AIR" in the market and the app is not found.
So, I downloaded an app that was build to run in AIR and when I launch it, I get an alert "This application requires Adobe AIR. Install AIR now?" I click Install and I get an alert "The requested item could not be found."
Then I installed the Amazon store and purchased (for free) Adobe Air, but it too fails on install.
I can't believe this is an issue w/ my phone.
Anyone know what the issue could be?
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. Just found another forum post w/ similar issues:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3450026
And the link to the Adobe site w/ certified devices:
http://www.adobe.com/flashplatform/certified_devices/smartphones.html
Even though my phone model is new (as of Feb. 2011), it's not on the list. I cannot and apparently will not be able to install AIR or any applications meant to run in AIR. Kind of sucks since I'm developing mobile apps.

What is your device model?

It's an LG Optimus V (VM670). Android OS 2.2.1.

I'm sorry...
This model contains an older CPU (ARMv6)... Air 2.7 requires ARMv7 or higher.

Hi,
I found requirements for Flash and Air on Android from following Sites:
http://www.adobe.com/products/air/systemreqs/#mobile
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/
VGA | WVGA | WSVGA (1024x600) | WXGA (1280x800) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Hardware requirements | Dedicated Cortex A8 (ARMv7) 550MHz App Processor with Neon for A8 only Hardware Vector FPU | Dedicated Cortex A8 (ARMv7) 800MHz App Processor Hardware Vector FPU | Dedicated Cortex A8 1000Mhz App Processor Hardware Vector FPU | Dual-Core Cortex A8 1000Mhz App Processor Hardware Vector FPU |
Operating system | Android™ 2.2* |
If I am getting it correctly, both requires same ARM version, and Hardware Vector FPU.
But I have found many devices, where Adobe Flash is installed and running. (If market does not show Adobe Flash, device manufacturer provides flash apk which works)
But can not install Adobe Air. Market does not show Adobe Air.
Is there any way to sort this out?
I get feeling that as Flash is more popular software, people have got patched version for the same. But for Air, it does not exist.
Thanks

Why Adobe AIR for Android cannot be found in the Android market in the first place??

It's here:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.adobe.air&hl=en
It wouldn't show up on devices that can use it. So, an Android 2.1 or earlier device for example. Or anything that doesn't have ARMv7.

Thanks Colin. I think this is one of the biggest downsides of using Adobe AIR for Android as how can we build an andriod app and need to ask the user to check their phone whether it has ARMv7? We just bought an Android phone 2.2 and thought that it should be able to install Adobe AIR as Adobe website only says 2.2 and above. We are gutted.

It is actually pretty hard for most people to find out if their phone has ARMv7. It is written about in the AIR requirements, and any AIR apps won't show up at all on a device that can't run them. But, there will be plenty of people who will assume that the higher end phones from only a year ago ought to cope, only to find out that they won't.

That's right. most people will know or can check the version of Android but it's very hard for people to check whether it has ARMv7 processor with vector FPU, minimum 550MHz, OpenGL ES 2.0, H.264 and AAC HW decoders. Does it mean that when you develop an app that requires AIR then you will need to ask your users to find out the device requirements first? This is a really bad practice though.

If you just publish your app, it won't show up for users that can't install it.

If you're making an app for a client to use on their own devices, then yes, you would forewarn them about the requirements. For anyone else, they're not going to be able to buy it by mistake, it won't appear in the marketplace if their device isn't supported.

We are creating a free app for the public actually so it’s not a very good idea.

It's not a good idea? If it is for the public, then you shouldn't mind about the requirement. Most of recent phones should be able to run your app.

Bad practice is still the second thing. The main point is that you are going to lost your potential customer when they found that their phones can't run your apps.
Here is the list of ARMv6 phones:

The system requirements for Adobe AIR are RIDICULOUSLY high.
A lot of devices won't be able to run a lot of apps that their hardware should be PERFECTLY capable of running.
But what else can we expect from Adobe?

Sorry its not an answer to your original post!
I'm also trying to install Adobe Air for Android, but on a tablet (i-box T70) with the following spec:
Android v2.3.3
ARM11 processor
256MB DDR2 RAM
WVGA
The device is not being recognised. Is there anyway of installing Air (current or older) manually on my device? Its not visible on Android market place and I've not been able to download it via https://market.android.com/details?id=com.adobe&hl=en .
Any work rounds tips etc, or even a no can do! would be very helpful and save me (and others) a lot of time.

The naming of ARM processors and the instruction set names, can get confusing. Look at this page:
http://www.arm.com/products/processors/classic/arm11/index.php
You'll read there that ARM11 has a powerful ARMv6 instruction set. AIR requires the more powerful ARMv7 instruction set. So, although 11 is a bigger number than 7, that processor isn't supported.

the runtime.apk is included in the Air SDK (most times at least)
http://www.adobe.com/special/products/air/sdk/
It sounds like for you, it doesnt matter, but if someones device hardware was supported you can manually install this .apk or a captive runtime app.
A friend has a 'viewsonic G-tab' with no access to the normal andorid market or Air, the hardware checks out, so I recently installed Air runtime + air app and a captive runtime Air app. Both work as expected.
