I tried exporting to my desktop first. then i tried creating a folder (the untitled folder) and tried to export there. still didn't work

You mean media encoder? Do I need to have adobe media encoder to export to MOV?

You're not exporting an MOV in your screenshot, you're exporting an (H.264) MP4.

Use Format: Quicktime / Preset: Default (Animate) to export a lossless MOV.
