Draw on top of symbol, group or graphic

Hey!

I'm trying to find a way how to draw on top of Symbol, group or graphic. Unfortunately the paint strokes always appear below them.

One solution is to switch Brush to Object drawing mode, however I'd love to keep it in normal mode.

I'm asking this because I use a specific workflow for cleaning up parts of drawings in a following way.

When I sketch something more complex it gets messy. I select that messy part, turn into light Grey. Hit CMD+G - so it becomes group. Draw on top of the group a clean drawing. Select that messy sketch group and delete. I have a clean drawing now!  The problem is - I have to switch to object drawing mode whenever I use this trick.
So I wonder if I'm missing something and maybe drawing with a regular brush on top of symbols is possible in some way.

Thanks,

Agris

The only way raw shapes can appear above anything else is if they're on a higher layer.

Or I guess you could set the layer transparent. Then you can see shapes through the symbols.

Clay is right. Make a new layer and place it on top of the symbol layer.
