FPS seems to change during playback?

My animation is set to 24 FPS, but when I play it back, the FPS in the timeline changes from 24 to 12.05 FPS. I'd like to view my animation in real time... Can anyone provide insight on this?

FPS drops when GUI can not properly render complex animation. This is the main disadvantage of canvas.

What do you mean the FPS is "changing" to 12.05? That's awfully specific. Where are you getting that number?

Regardless, playing the timeline rarely gives realtime results. That's why the Test Movie function exists. Use that.

In the timeline where the FPS is grayed out so it can't be accidentally changed there, during playback it changes. But thank you for the advice to view it using the "test movie" function. It's more of a hassle, since it doesn't leave my hidden layers hidden and takes longer to load, but it more accurate. Thank you.

There is a publish setting option to include hidden layers. If you uncheck that it would then only include the visible layers. Remember to check the box when you're doing a real publish.

That is not a unique disadvantage of canvas. It's an inherent characteristic of literally every real-time rendering system.

Just to help shed more light on this topic, content published from Animate is dynamic. It renders on the fly. The only exception is when you export to a fixed frame format such as video will you see consistent frame rates.

If you want to see your animation play at the desired frame rate while inside Animate, under the View menu there's a way to reduce the aliasing that will help and also try reducing the magnification of the stage to help your system's video card during playback.
