How to maintain vector when moving image from illustrator to library to animate?

Hi, I am new to animate, and have had success using files created in capture, pulled directly from the library, into animate cc, while maintaining the vector.  Yet when i pull the same vector into an illustrator file, and then make some changes, add some color, it's still reading as a vector, then pull it into the library, where it says it's a shape, then pull it from the library into the animate file, it does not maintain the vector, it's just one shape.  If it try to save it as an ai file and then import it, or drag it, again, no vector attributes when in the animate file.  I'be tried importing it to screen, same, no vector assets, once it gets there.

I have read and re-read the information adobe provides, and it seems like it is meant to work.

Perhaps I am missing something really simple?  Please help.

Like a movieclip symbol you enter the grouping of the shapes by choosing Edit in Place from the pulldown menu until you see selection marquees around the elements you wish to edit.
