I'm totally lost when it comes to rigging

I did all of the rigging tutorials just fine but as soon as I imported my own images to animate, it became obvious that I learned almost nothing.  In the tutorials, the images are already neatly divided into layers and parts and they don't really show you how to do any of that.  Now, whenever I rig something and try to make it move it looks really stupid because the rest of the image moves along with it.  All I want is the basic information to move forward and start animating like I did in the tutorials.

Have a look at this article, which describes in detail how to organise your character elements and how to engineer joints for rigging.

Thanks for replying but as the article says, it's for people who already "know Flash well", which I don't.  I've never made anything in Adobe Animate outside of the tutorials.

Then my suggestion would be to get familiar with the drawing tools first.

Then with Graphic symbols.

Start with very simple shapes and very simple designs. Make sure you create the body parts separate on separate layers.
