Is it possible to edit a symbol "in place" with the background scene playing along?

When I edit a symbol "in place" the background scene the symbol is nested in turns white but it does not advance frames as I add frames to the symbol. Is there any way to make the background scene update along with the symbol's frames as I am editing it?
