Mp3 doesn't work, wav doesn't work, and they both resulted in the same error prompt, which read "One or more files were not imported because there were problems reading them.". Neither importing it to library, nor importing it directly to the stage, worked.

open the audio in audition, resave with 8- or 16-bit sounds at sample rates of 11, 22, or 44 kHz.

Oh! Like the Audacity thing that I see pop up on other answers to questions that were similar to mine? I wasn't sure if it would be applicable to my situation as I'm not sure if those questions were referring to exactly the same thing as I.

i don't know what else you're checking, but you need a sound editor to make your sound files compliant with animate's restrictions.
