I noticed you asked about the canvas size and not the stage size. If you're just animating to go out to video for YouTube, using an ActionScript 3.0 FLA would be better than using an HTML5 Canvas FLA. You get access to more filters, and you can use Stream sync with the audio to make it easier to set the timing of your animations.

thank you for replying, i definitely need to watch a few tutorials.

and i dont know if this question makes sense, but say i want to make an animation that will fill a 100x100 space [for an avatar online]. using flash, is there any way to make my animation look like an HD animation?

Explain what you think an "HD animation" looks like.

There is a better answer. You can set the render size when you export video, so if you have reasons that you need the stage to be smaller, you could certainly pick any 16:9 ratio, and just set the 1920x1080 when you export.

Example sizes would include 960x540, 1280x720, even 640x360.
