Substance 3D stager will not import resources (PNGs, JPGs, OBJ, FBX) from box client

My team uses box as our backup and versioning solution. We work from the client, which keeps an image of our folder structure on our local workstations and streams in the relevant file when it's in use.

This is a vital workflow for our team, and it's needed to keep things backed up and easily accessible to distributed members. So, we're not changing that.

However, when using Stager for mocking up 3D scenes, any PNGs, JPGs, OBJ, FBX (and probably more) will not open directly from the box client. On our end, it's the same as importing a file from our local files in the explorer (it looks the same, too). But Stager will refuse to import, giving an error message "There was a problem reading the file" or "UNABLE TO IMPORT MODEL: Stager supports poygon based geometry only. the file does not contain any supported content."

I assume Stager is not allowing for the content to stream in before it checks for compatability, but I don't know for sure. I would love this to be fixed at some point, it's frustrating to constantly manage files on my desktop to work around this issue.

That right you need to change to polygons geometry of you object.

There are some limitations for network paths.

Adobe Substance 3D Stager doesn’t natively support working directly from network paths due to authentication limitations. However, you can still make it work across a network with a few OS-level tweaks. Here’s how to approach it:

:hammer_and_wrench:️ Workaround for Network Access

To use networked files in Stager, you’ll need to map the network drive so your operating system treats it like a local path:

  • Windows: Use File Explorer to map the network location as a drive letter.

  • macOS: Use Finder to connect to the server and mount the network share.

  • Linux: Use terminal commands to mount the network share.

Once mounted, Stager should be able to access assets and save projects as if they were local.

I'd like to try your suggestion. For some reason I can't get the links to work

I am having this same issue, but specifically on Windows. On my Mac I am able to import 3D files from Box without issue, it is only on my Windows 11 machine that I get the same error message as originally noted.
