How do I generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR)?

Engaged ,
Apr 27, 2014 Apr 27, 2014

If I buy an SSL in godaddy, how do I generate the CSR? If my site is hosted in BC, who is the web server? I've had a few sites search for the name of the web server and it comes up as unknown every time.

You can't generate a CSR on Business Catalyst.

In fact you can't install an SSL certificate.

However BC does provide every website with a SSL certicifate that you can use without any config.

for instanace here is ours (removed)

Hope that helps

What if I host the site through godaddy? and that's confusing why wouldn't bc permit a site to be more secure?

Then you'd create the Cert through GoDaddy inclunding the CSR

But you shouldn't need an SSL if you host through BC. They provide one. Its one of the benefits of BC.

That is correct but you can not host BC outside of the Adobe environment. You can not put BC on your Godaddy hosting.

It does not mean it is not secure, it is one of the most secure CMS systems on the market.

the site wasn't created in bc it was only hosted there. i'm sure that its secure but it doesn't matter whether or not i know that, it only matters if the customer does and I can't assume that they are going to know that BC is one of the most secure.

I think you need to understand that BC is both system and hosted. It is called a SAAS - Software as a sollution. You can not host BC anywhere else outside the Adobe environment it is set in. So you can not just host something on BC, you can not install wordpress etc on there.

So you can not put it on Godaddy, you can not move to Godaddy and use its features.

So with that and what Brett said you can not host BC and you can not add your own certificates to it.

so when i click 'publish' on adobe muse, and the site gets published to BC and hosted on BC... you're saying that i'm not actually hosting the site on BC. you can 'just host' on bc via muse. you just assumed that i created the site in bc. i've also uploaded the site onto godaddy. i've done two things that you said can't be done?

Muse is built to work with BC,

BC you need to understand BC is not a true hosting sollution like what you have with Godaddy though.

You can also use Muse to build sites just with what ever but features like menus, blogs(BC modules), web forms etc will not be functional as those are specifc to BC.

BC is much more then just hosting.

So you can upload a site to Godaddy but this will not be a BC site. There is nothing to do here and attaching certificates etc is outside the realms of BC and Adobe in that regard. That is for you to setup.

For any eCommerce store or web forms you create you will have to develop in PHP with your own sollutions on that Godaddy hosting.

IF you want to stick with BC you wont be able to add a certificate and you will need to use what BC comes with.

We need either:

  • a) BC to add full SSL to customers domains (not just the *.worldsecuresystems.com subdomains), or;
  • b) BC to provide the ability to create CSR codes for our sites so we can use SSL certificates from our domain registrant (ie: NameCheap/Godaddy, etc)

BC, if you're listening... people have been requesting this for years!

BC, At the very least tell us if you are (or are not) going to implement this, and if you are - roughly how long before it will be released.

Hi, I can confirm that we are listening, and that SSL certificates are high on our priority list for right now. I do not have an estimate as to when we will be able to launch, but you will see our initial steps in the next few months as we prepare to roll it out. We have taken several steps in the direction of https by having all our new site administrations on HTTPs and by providing the option for existing sites to switch. We will also have a timed approach into automatically switching the existing site admins to HTTPs. Magda

Any plans in the future to add the ability to generate CSRs for the use of external SSL certificates? This has become increasingly important for the clients that we are currently managing in our Partner Portal as switching their nameservers (as well as all records associated) to Business Catalyst is not an ideal solution.

Thanks

No Plans, BC needs to run its own process and ensure the security of the system and going forward have PCI compliance under custom SSL as well as their worldsecuresystems.

That task and verification and management their end will be very hard if not impossible with ability to have different custom SSL's from all over the place.
