P: Many metadata fields in CR3 files not imported

[Update: LR 7.3.1 doesn't import a number a metadata fields from .CR3 files that are read from other raw formats, including the GPS fields, XMP:Rating, XMP:Title, EXIF:ImageDescription, EXIF:UserComment.  See below for more details.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear community,

I own a new Canon EOS M50 and took a lot of GPS tagged pictures in my last holiday. Lightroom is importing the CR3 files without any problems, but I miss the GPS position. If I look to the files with the tool of Canon I see, that the position where the picture was taken, is inside of the file. Even if I export the pic to a jpg and import it then to Lightroom I have the position - but I like to have the raw file.

So far I found no way to display the position in combination with the CR3 file. I could put it in manually for each file, but therefor these are to many.

I already double-checked the import parameters and no preset was applied, so I guess this is obviously still an issue of the cr3 implementation in the camera raw module.

Here a link to an example file: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AtdqMJFRUFadgrYafe8Xh8oe1NJ5fg

Maybe somebody has an idea or workaround... At least it should be known and be fixed in a future release.

Thanks and regards

Andreas

Give the new version a try and let us know if it solves the issue.

J'ai testé ce fichier sur LRClassic sur Mac, même constat, le champ GPS dnas les méta-données de LR Classic ne sont pas reprise ... donc il manque cette information dans le script de lecture des .CR3.

La conversion en .DNG ne change rien !

I tested this file on LRClassic on Mac, same observation, the GPS field dnas the meta-data of LR Classic are not resumed ... so it misses this information in the reading script of .CR3.

The conversion to .DNG does not change anything!

Dear community,

I own a new Canon EOS M50, Lightroom is importing the CR3 files without any problems, but I miss the stars rating, before indicated direcly on camera. If I look to the files with the DPP4 tool of Canon I see them, but none rating indication is visible on LR CC.

Here a link to an example file with rating 5 stars in camera:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/tbvickh5m9vf0r9/IMG_0249.CR3?dl=0

I think that is a bug of LR CC. Maybe somebody has an idea or workaround... At least it should be known and be fixed in a future release.

Thanks in advance & Kind Regards,
Simone

I've verified that, in addition to the GPS fields, LR 7.3.1 doesn't import the following metadata fields from CR3 files:

XMP:Rating, XMP:Title, EXIF:ImageDescription, EXIF:UserComment

LR does import these fields from CR2 files. Most likely this bug is related to the fact that CR3 uses the ISO Base Media File Format rather than the TIFF format used by most raw files.

Do you have a CR3 test file with above metadata fields? If so, could you share it to keniya@adobe.com?

Here is a zipped folder containing a .CR3 and a .ARW with these fields set:
2005011dgjm6_inline-3992f142-baeb-4331-bba1-03a51b20a7d6-2000817426.png

LR 7.3.1 imports these fields from the .ARW but not the .CR3.  (I misspoke about importing the two EXIF fields -- I got confused.)

Dear Smit,

I can't find your comment here (but I've seen the preview on e-mail), anyway I can't say about GPS (I don't use it), but I can confirm your phrase: "We are still looking into the issues for other fields." Infact the problem of rating is not solved still in this last version of Lightroom Classic CC Version 7.4.

Thank you in advance,

Simone

Right, as Smit indicated in his now-deleted comment, reading GPS from CR3 files may be fixed. (I can't verify, since the sample linked above is now gone end ExifTool can't yet update the GPS field of CR3 files.)

But Title, User Comment, Description, and Rating still aren't being read (using the test files previously posted).

My CR3 files containing GPS data are not being read by Lightroom CC Classic 7.4.  :(Additional info: I do use a metadata preset, but it only adds copyright info. I'm using the CR3 files with compression (a new feature with the M50).

Hi Anthony,

Could you share a test file and your metadata preset file to keniya@adobe.com?

"I do use a metadata preset, but it only adds copyright info."

A common mistake is to check the GPS box in the metadata preset editor while leaving the field empty (see the screenshot):

RackMultipart201807284032819p7-fcf4323c-be49-41b0-bba3-ce984383829e-999066759.png

This clears the GPS field. So edit your metadata import preset and make sure GPS is unchecked;
