Button object appears flat sometimes, rounded/glossy other times

A coworker and I have been simultaneously developing a series of Captivate 3 videos and encountered an odd discrepancy. We have two text-type button objects on the final slide of each video, one replays and one goes to next video. Initially the buttons always looked the same for each of our projects, but part way through my coworker's stared looking more rounded on the surface with a more pronounced gradient, giving it a glossy effect.

He's tried copy and pasting in a button object from another project that isn't having this quirk, and it still has the glossy effect when published. Also, we can't find any property that influences the graphical style of the button (we're not using the image buttons). I'm attaching screenshots of each style for comparison. The flatter button is the default and is what the button has always looked like up to this point.

PS, this is not an important issue, we can roll with this discrepancy. Just curious if anyone else has encountered this.

Hi there

Assuming you are referring to the standard Text Button, it's an issue I mention with each Captivate class I facilitate.

In a nutshell, if you are using the standard Text Button, the way it appears will depend on the Windows styling that is in effect at the time. Check the image below:

If you are on Windows Vista or Windows 7, I suppose they may even look more different than what I've shown. The images were captured using a Windows XP system.

There is only one way to provide a uniform appearance across all systems. That's to forego Text Buttons and opt instead for Image Buttons.

Cheers... Rick

Thanks Cap'n

But does that styling difference refer to the Windows styling effect of the user publishing the project, in which case it will always look the same for every end user who sees it? Or, is it based on the Windows styling of the end user, in which case the text button will appear different for different users?

Hi again

Looks like I somehow missed the mark. Sorry about that. I'll try again.

The effect is applied at the time you view the Captivate output. So it will look one way on one PC and a different way on another PC. Depending on the effects in place at the time it is viewed. That's how I captured the images. I created a single Captivate file. Did not touch it after creating. Then applied the Windows Classic style to my Windows system. I saw the gray button. I then switched to the XP style in Windows and viewed the content again. Saw the rounded corners.

Cheers... Rick

No problem, I was pretty sure that's what you were saying, just clarifying 🙂

My situation is that I'm viewing two swfs from my machine, and each text button appears different. So that seems to rule out the Windows styling (though makes perfect sense what you're saying). Therefore, seems like something inherent to the swf project or publisher's machine?

Hi again

Well, to be fair it was a couple of versions back when I did my testing. So it's possible that things have changed. Or maybe I'm just remembering it wrong. I am getting a bit long in the tooth. LOL

Personally, if I'm ever concerned about the actual button appearance, I opt for image buttons anyway.

Cheers... Rick

No problem Captiv8r. As always your participation in the forum is above-par and appreciated

As I said, we'll just live with the small difference. In our case image buttons don't exactly fit the bill. But they are my preference, I dislike text buttons
