Can you create a 'Home' page within CP9 which replicates a web based page?

Hi,

I have created a  'home' page for a large project and we need it to work as a web page would. For example:

There is a banner along the top containing content section headers, when you roll over a section header a sub menu appears. We now want to add rollovers onto each of the items on the sub menu which would:

  1. change the state of that item on the sub-menu whilst the mouse is over the rollover and
  2. allows the user to click on the item within the submenu to navigate to a new page

Like a webpage we do not want the user to have to click to see the menu, the only action requiring a click should be if they choose to navigate away from the page using one of the sub menu links.

We have tried using States (but you cannot add buttons or SmartShapes which are buttons to the state), Rollover Slidelets and Advanced Actions, but cannot seem to get it right.

Does anyone know a way of doing this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

This is not built into Captivate. I teach students to do this using the roll over capability of slidelets and show - hide buttons. It can be done but with the future of flash?

I have a question.  Is this large project going to be published to an LMS?

If so, will it be intended to work as a multi-module course where this HOME page is supposed to launch other modules?

If so, you may be in trouble.

Absolutely agree - would only use for a single "self contained" project.

No it will not be published to an LMS. We are currently looking into an appropriate hosting platform.

It is, however, a multi module course where the HOME page is launching other modules.

I don't like the sound of your last point ...I am guessing we may need to start looking at a different design?

As you probably know, rollovers are not supported on mobile devices. If you want more events, have a look at the CpExtra widget (HTML only) or the EventHandler widget, both from InfoSemantics. I have stopped using rollovers, but I liket de boule events for ROllover Slidelets and have used them a lof for SWF output.

I have used rollover slidelets, but am stuck on how to show and hide buttons without a click action. I understand how to show a button (i.e. on rollover> show button), but how do I get that button to disappear when the user moves their mouse away from the rollover area? Would you mind briefly explaining how you teach your students to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Hello It really is a combination of correctly positioning the objects in the timeline is terms of z order or how they relate to each other in the timeline. If you like, you can contact me via my website at CaptivateInstructor.com and I can give you a quick demo using GoToTraining.

Rollover slidelets are not compatible with HTML5 and while the slidelet might register a usable event when the mouse rolls OVER the hit area, it doesn't have an equivalent event that you could use to trigger a HIDE action when the mouse rolls OUT of the hit area.  This has always been a major flaw of the Rollover Slidelet Object.

Captivate's rollover caption and rollover image objects do not allow you to execute Advanced Actions in any way from their rollover or rollout events.

As Lieve mentioned, the Infosemantics Event Handler widget CAN be used to trigger actions ON Mouse Over as well as ON Mouse OUT of objects, but since it is only for SWF output we don't really believe it should be seen as a long-term solution because Flash content is now being phased out by companies all over the planet.

For HTML5 output you CAN use the CpExtra widget to set up EventHandlers for executing actions from rollovers.  Although it is true that rollovers are not really supported on MOBILE touchscreen devices, there's really nothing wrong with using rollovers in HTML5 if your audience will only be using the content on desktop or laptop computers.
