Make object 'float' in responsive project captivate 9

Hello!

I want to create custom next and back buttons for a responsive project (captivate 9) that 'float' on top of the content. When viewing the project on a mobile I want the next and back buttons to appear at all times, so that when you scroll down the buttons do not disappear. Basically, I want to be able to make custom buttons that function in the same way that the built-in captivate player works.

I would just use the built-in captivate player, however I find it very useful to have more control over the actions of the next and back buttons, such as being able to 'jump to slide X', it is also easier to change the design!

Does anyone know if this is at all possible?

Thanks!

Liz

Hi Liz,

It is certainly possible and probably preferable to create your own nav buttons you would however have to place them in the course itself, usually at the bottom right hand corner. They won't float, but they would appear at the same location on every screen. So you would have to take that into account when you design.

There are several posts/videos on how to create these, either in this forum,  or on YouTube, just search for "custom navigation in Captivate" or something like that. It is usually created with Advanced Actions and a combination of elements in Master Pages or a single instance repeated for the rest of the project.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for responding, it's not creating the buttons that I'm having a problem with, it's simply the idea of creating a 'floating' bar. My client doesn't want the buttons to just sit at the bottom of the screen, then want them to always be visible so that doesn't work for me, but thanks for your help anyway!

Totally understandable, I also rarely use the default skins. Although for design reasons: are you aware of the fact that the skin is one of the components of a Captivate theme?

I understand the problem for buttons disappearing on slides where the user has to scroll and have no really appropriate answer, just a workaround: put a pair of each button on the screen, the first relative to the top of the slide, the second relative to the bottom of the slide. And hoping, that in any position one of those buttons will be visible.

Hi Lilybiri,

Thanks for your reply, yes I have been into the skin settings and changed colours etc but still not as nice as using your own buttons! But think I can fix that by going into the source files and changing the images, it's definitely more the fact that you can't use different button actions on the playbar which I rely on a lot!

Thanks for your work around idea, but there's a lot of content on each screen so even that isn't going to work that well. It's just because it's on mobile and easy access to the buttons is fairly crucial. Was just hopeful that someone with maybe more javascript knowledge than me would have figured out a clever workaround, but maybe it is impossible!

Yes, unfortunately Captivate doesn't work that way with custom buttons, unlike a web site, which I think your client is probably trying to replicate.

Cheers
