Does anyone know if a screen reader reads text or other items if they are OFF the stage/.

Not sure about screen readers, but objects which are off the stage are not included on publishing. I cannot imagine that they could be detected by a screenreader if they don't exist.

Maybe exceptions are objects which will appear from off the stage to the slide with an Entrance effect. They are of course well included in the output.
