Scrubbing the playhead in Timeline doesn't work

Community Expert ,

Hi,

I've created a project that consists of a couple of slides.
When I'm working in Edit View and trying to scrubb the playhead or press F3 on the keyboard to preview the content, nothing happens. When I use F3 the playhead moves in the Timeline but the content doesn't move...
Any help will be appreciated.

Ok, I've refrained from asking previously, but what does "scrub the playhead" mean?

F3 is next to useless as far as I've seen and I always use F4, F8 or F10 as appropriate (e.g. taking into account that your buttons might not work in a 5 slide preview that needs to jump to a slide other than those 5).

Hi Kerry

If you tap the F3 key or the Spacebar the playhead begins traveling across the time increments. If you tap F3 or Spacebar again it stops. You may also click anywhere along the time increments to coax the playhead to that spot.

If you click the playhead and drag it left or right, the action is referred to as "scrubbing" the playhead.

As I understand it, the phrase "scrubbing the playhead" stems from the days of reel to reel tape. The tape operator could grab each reel and rotate them to move the tape back and forth across the playhead and "scrub" it against the playhead. In the Captivate case the action would seem the reverse. Instead of scrubbing the tape against the playhead you are scrubbing the playhead against the tape.

Scrub a dub dub! Rick

Anyway, when I scrubb the playhead or press F3, the playhead travels across the timeline from left to right but nothing happens on the screen...
Adobe documentation for Captivate says that it should update content in preview window...

Hi there

What type of slide is this? Is it a "Full motion" slide? By Full Motion I mean does its thumbnail in the Film Strip have a camcorder icon? Are you able to post a screen capture of the slide in question as it appears to you in Edit view?

You may post screen captures using www.freeimagehosting.net

Cheers... Rick

Hi,

if you see the timeline in the screenshot, you do not have any contents on the slide till around about 17.5 secs.

After that you have a Highlightbox for 3 secs and the mouse appears for last 2 secs of the slide.

When you preview as the playhead is "scrubbing" through the timline you will only see the contents which are

present at the position where the playhead currently is.

In this case you would probably see nothing and hear the slide audio for first 17 secs... followed by other items bcoming

visibile. Hope there is nothing more to this issue.

btw its advisable that you avoid "scrubbing" or what they call "on stage preview". The reason being memory leak related to

rendering of swf frames by CP.

Cheers!!

Manoj

I understand that but my question is: why nothing happens when I scrubb the playhead on the frames where the mouse is supposed to move or a dialog box should appear?

Even when I press play the playhead moves across the timeline but nothing happens on the screen....

Hi again

Is this by chance Captivate 4? If so, perhaps you are seeing an issue others have reported. There have been a few reports I've seen here where Captivate 4 sort of freaks out when performing actions such as scrubbing the playhead. Some are speculating it's a memory leak.

Cheers... Rick
