When I try to open a file that is already created it gives me this message:

Did you investigate any of the issues the dialog suggests?

If all those are ok, especially HD space and resources, do you have the file backed-up anywhere?

CP files do get corrupted on occasion, the chances are apparently higher if you're opening a project from a network location. Its generally recommended you work locally (open/save the project on your local machine) and save up to a network drive or other backup location daily.

Yes, I did look into those but don't think any of them are the problem. The file is something that was created a couple years ago by someone else and I am trying to go back in to make some edits to things that have changed in the past couple of years. Any ideas?

DId you open the file with the same version as the one it was created with?

I am unsure of how to tell what version of Captivate the courses were created in. Is there a way to tell by the file type or would the original creator of the file have to tell me?

It could be an upgrade issue, but I don't know about a way to see the original version. Can you ask the author?

That one little checkbox in Preferences that tells Captivate to save a backup every time you save your file . . . that has saved me from TONS of re-work on multiple occasions.  I do wish that the folks at Adobe would set the default to checked rather than us having to find it and check it ourselves. If you have not done that, do it now. Before you do another lick of work on your project, go check that box.  Seriously!

I found out that the programs were created in Captivate 8. Would I be able to open those courses in Captivate 7?

No, especially since changes were big between 7.and 8.

Any given version of Captivate will open files from the previous version.

So if you have CP8, you would be able to open CP7 files.

If this is the issue, then the source file is likely pre-CP7, so most likely CP6 or CP5.

Does it have a .cp or a .cptx extension?

At any rate, if you can post the file somewhere, I'll download it and see if I can open it in an older version, then upgrade it to whatever version of CP you are trying to use, then send you that updated file.

(unless you happen to have Captivate version 6, or 5, or 4....installed somewhere then you can do that yourself).

I currently have CP7 downloaded. I am unsure of what version they were created in, but they were created in December of 2015 and early 2016 if that helps. It is a CPTX file type. I don't have the older versions of Captivate. Where could I post one?

Thanks!

Actually, look at this link:

Old Captivate Files (*.cp)

Adobe may be able to help you directly.

If CP7 won't open the file and it's .cptx then it may have been created with CP6.

I think CP5 still created .cp files, not .cptx, but I could be wrong.

If true that this was created with CP6 then CP7 should be able to open it, in which case the issue could be the file is just corrupted.

Check the above thread and send them an email - perhaps that will help.

If not, post back.

good luck

I don't think that is the issue since they are all CPTX files. How would I know if they are corrupted?

Thanks for your help!

Lieve is correct, of course.

It should have occurred to me you had source files newer than your version of CP.

Very few programs, if any, can open source files created with a newer version of the program.

You need CP8, or newer, to edit those files- no way around it.

That is very helpful. I am currently in the process of getting Adobe Captivate 8 downloaded on my computer. Hopefully the files will open then. Thanks!!
