Feedback form - send via email ?

New Here ,

Hi, we've been using Captivate v1.0 for our e-learning. After downloading the trial of V3, we though we might use it to create branching online presentations. All works well apart from is it possible to have a slide, where the user would put in his/her contact details, and that is then emailed to a specific (non changing) address at the end of the presentation.

I tried to do it with questions slides, but they just email me points, not what was actually entered by the user into the short text questions fields.

Any guesses, or should I be using a different Adobe product for this ?

Hi mattyduk

You might try using a simple slide up front that simply has a few Text Entry Box (TEB) objects. Configure these to Report the Score and you should end up with an ability to see the contact details. Because of the way the E-Mail message will be returned, you would probably want to make the "Correct Entry" part of the TEB look a bit like this:

Name
EMail Address
(any other contact info fields you need here)

I've done this by inserting multiple TEBs on a page. Configure each TEB so there is No Action and no Feedback captions for all but the last one. Configure the last one so that a failure (Which is the desired outcome) goes to the next slide. You may even wish to enable the Submit button on that one. Configure all so they don't impact scoring.

Hopefully this helps... Rick

hi, thanks for the quick reply.

Ok, I've setup up three TEBs on slide 1. The first one has correct entries entry as "Name", and the second one as "Email". I've set each of these to have no action, and the third field company, on failure to go to the next slide. When I press the send email button on the quiz results page, I get an email, but with just the core score results, no actual detail that was entered. I've put the sample captivate 3 file here, so you can have a quick look and point out where I'm going wrong. Thanks again.

Hello again mattyduk

Okay, pulled down your project and had a play with it. Here is what I changed.

Edit each of the TEB objects on the first slide and make the following changes:
DE-select the "Infinite Attempts" check box. Allow a single attempt. Notice that once you do this, you need to choose "No Action" for the "After last attempt" setting. After you do this, you probably need to choose Tab as your shortcut key. TEB beasties normally work as follows: The user types something in. A trigger tells Captivate to evaluate what has been typed and compare it against what is being expected. So I normally set all but the last to have the trigger of "Tab". User types, presses Tab, which is a normal response.

Give that a go and see if it works for you. Worked here on my own PC.

Cheers... Rick

thanks again. We're getting closer !!

I've made the changes as requested

http://www.nextgenconsoles.co.uk/Tri-Directquiztest.cp

Although the tab is working between email and company, my main problem is that when I get to the results slide, and press "Send email", all I'm getting is the following

Core Data
"Status","Location","Raw Score","Max Score","Min Score","Time"
"failed","1","0","3","0","00:00:39"

not the actual name, email address and company name I entered. Am I missing something here ?

Sorry for the continual replies but I'm trying to get a demonstration ready for the board on Monday, to purchase upgrade licenses for our Captivate 1 licences.

kind regards

Mat

Hi Mat

You might try opening Quiz > Quiz Preferences... and change the way E-Mail will report. I think you have it configured for Attachment. Try configuring it for Body Text and see if that makes a difference. I use Thunderbird as my E-Mail client and the Attachment never works for Thunderbird.

If you click here you may download the modified CP file.

Cheers... Rick

Hi Rick,

I've downloaded and used your version of the captivate document.

I guess we have some kind of incompatability with MS Outlook 2003. After I've pressed enter on the company field, I then press the "Send Email" button on the results page. This then brings up a new Outlook message, with the correct email address (mdunning@tri-direct.co.uk), the subject as Results: 10/04/2007, but the contents of the message (as before) are as follows :-

Core Data
"Status","Location","Raw Score","Max Score","Min Score","Time"
"failed","1","0","3","0","00:00:17"

I am doing this from "previewing" the project. If I do it from publishing and opening up automatically in IE, the Send email button, doesn't do anything.

thanks again

Mat

Mat,

Sorry, I only have Captivate 2 so I'm flying blind here, but...

If you're only seeing core results, maybe you need to select the "Report interactions and the score" option in the Quiz Manager (or whatever the Cap3 equivalent is)? I wasn't aware that SCORM passed actual user input but if anything would control that ability, I would think it would be that setting.

For what it's worth, I use Outlook 2003 on my work machine and when I use the e-mail reporting option, I don't get prompted to send an e-mail either.

You should know that the e-mail reporting option is extremely problematic and really only usable for tightly-controlled environments. For example, a corporate intranet where you know that each machine is configured exactly the same.

For your reporting to work, you're at the mercy of each user's individual machine settings to have an e-mail client installed and configured correctly. For instance, my mom wouldn't be able to take your materials since she accesses her free Yahoo mail account through a browser, meaning we never specified a mail client in Windows. Every time she clicks a mailto: link, Windows prompts her to set up a new e-mail account in Outlook Express, at which point she calls me...

thanks for the reply. Seems it might be a glitch in Captivate 3, as I already had it selected to report scores and interactions, but I still just get the core data.

I think we will just use captivate for the main online presentation and scenario branching, and use some basic HTML forms for capture and email of info. As you said, putting myself at the mercy of someone elses email settings, rather than just posting via an html form, will cause untold issues.

thanks for yours and Captiv8r's replies. Just a shame it isn't doing what I wanted it to do.

cheers

Mat

I thought that somewhat curious I resolved your project of a look, really this is a problem, in the hour of sending of e-mail out of a straight LMS for the CP.
In my case that I do not use of an outloock only gmail it would complicate since since he would take the e-mail to.
It would need a servant POP SMTP, even in the case LMS I think that certain much would not give since he always calls an outloock.
I was shaping the PENS, at least the mistakes to what you pointed were not given by it any more, but so that that works correctly, it would have a shaped LMS I believe

When this situation was even complicated: (

Mat,

If you haven't seen it yet, check out this Developer Center article:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/captivate/articles/store_cpresults.html

If you're technical enough to pull your own information together using forms , you'll likely also be able to make use of the process outlined in the article above to snag the tracking information from Captivate and submit the whole thing in a single, all-inclusive e-mail.
