Saving an existing puppet in Illustrator creates issues with rigging. Legacy format warning in A.I.

I have used an existing puppet as a basis for my character. When I resave in Adobe Illustrator, Character Animator updates, but with issues with the puppet (e.g., all of the mouths show at once).

To be sure that I haven't accidentally changed something I oughtn't, I have recreated the issue:
1. Start a new project, and use the free example puppet 'footy starter'.
2. In Pro mode, select Edit>Edit Original
3. In Illustrator, make a minor change like adding a shape, then save (CTRL-S). At this point, this message appears:
Saving to a legacy format may cause some changes to your text layout and disable some editing features when the document is read back in. Do you want to continue?
4. Alt-Tab to Character Animator,  wait, and the puppet updates with the added shape, but also with rigging issues.

I am running Windows 11.
Adobe Illustrator 28.0
Adobe Character Animator 24.0 (Build 46)

I have tried exporting a freshly downloaded version of the puppet, using File>Export>Puppet before going through the four steps above, to see if the issue was maybe with the starter puppet having been created in an older version, but the outcome is the same.
