Creating puppet templates

Hello, all! Forgive me if this is covered in another discussion -- I couldn't find it anywhere.
I want to create my own basic puppet template in my own drawing style, rig it up, and then be able to create new puppets from it that I can customize with new faces, clothes, colors etc. I don't want the new puppets to be linked to the original, since I'm making each one different and don't want the new versions' customizations to affect the original.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks a bunch!
Ted

Do you need help with creating and rigging a puppet or are you simply looking for ideas to modify your template once it's built?

What I'm asking is, once I've created and rigged a puppet, can I then create a copy of it that can become independent of the original, so I can customize its look into a new character? Not a copy that's linked to the original, but one that I can go and add different art and do different stuff to?

I know it can be done, though my brain is kind of fuzzy on the details. For each variation, you'll want to use "Save as" to make a new project and then have a back-up of your original template file that you can use to modify the duplicates. I'm sorry, I know I'm missing something. The key I think is to have backups of your original files so that you can go in and edit the linked files. Does that help?

1. Select puppet in puppet panel.
2. Edit > Duplicate.
3. Save a separate copy of the character PSD or AI file. Like, Chloe2.psd.
4. In CH, select the puppet in RIg mode.
5. Click the blue art link in the right properties.
6. Select the new Chloe2.psd file.
