We are transferring all our sites to a new server - and then will be shutting off the current (older) server.
Can we have a license running on two servers temporarily while we transfer our sites over to the new server - as we are going to be using the same coldfusion license on the new server? Been trying to look around and can't seem to find a clear cut answer on how others handle this.
Any help to this question would be appreciated. Thanks.

That sounds like a question for Adobe's legal department, or at least Customer Service.

I have the exact same problem with migrating ColdFusion license. Currently I have deployed ColdFusion on one XP machine and I want to migrate the license to a Win2008 server. I tried to remove the license code in license.properties and restartthe ColdFusion. And it shows the license turned down to Developer, however, I still able to access the XP server from any other machines. When I apply the serial to the new one, it turns the server to the Developer not the Standard that I expected. Does Adobe take time to reset the license from one host to another ? Is there any tricks to do the migration ?
Please reply me ASAP....

Dev

As long as you complete your transition in a reasonable amount of time (less than 90 days), then there is no need to worry about license coverage. In fact, the ColdFusion 8 license allows for warm/hot backups as part of your license. Which means you can setup a 'reasonable amount' of servers with the same license as long as they are not hosting traffic in parallel. Of course, sometimes you'll want to send traffic to both servers (new and old) before you pull the the plug on the old. Again, this is ok as long as it's done in a reasonable amount of time.

On the new server install it as the trial version. Then migrate your apps. Enter your serial in the admin and you'll be converted.
At the present time, there isn't any online activation that will disable either of your servers if they are running in parallel. Just switch them out in a timely manner and you'll have no issues.
Good luck.

Thanks for your replying.
However, the problem still kick me out. When I apply the license code to the new server, the server turns Trial to Developer, which is still able to be access externally (I don't know if the Trial mode still in effects). After a couple of hours, my client complains about the new server cannot be accessed externally, since we have deployed a mission-critical service on ColdFusion, we cannot afford the downtime of ColdFusion. Then, I told my client to apply the license to the old one first, they can now access the service for limited IP addresses, but I find an error "IP license restriction is in effect" on server console. I am very frustrated, is that any ways to solve the problem ? It is really urgent.

Are you running CF in multi-server mode? If you are, have you entered the license in the CF admin for each instance?
I'm assuming that your default instance was in trial mode, it expired. The instance that's running needs the valid serial entered and then all CF instances need to be restarted.
If you're not running multi-server mode, can you describe your CF/JRun config?

Thanks for replying,
It is running on Single Server Configuration, here is the screen shot for the new server (a High-RES version is attached).
As you can see, the license is now Developer, even I have shut down the old and input a valid serial. I have tried to modify the license.properties under lib folder, remove the sn and code (this code will be restored every ColdFusion restarted) but it does not work at all.
#CF License File
#Wed Sep 30 01:28:19 EDT 2009
appserver=0V\=LUFWP]J(Z^V)[G?G5'C@ \n
code=7905576357591956381
sn=1187-5xxx-4xxx-xxx7-xxx5-0xxx
listen=true
user=
installlanguage=en
installtype=standalone
company=
previous_sn=
vendor=0YV\#Y\!,U&;_;YN@)&)B'"WP \n
Although I can now access the new server (still in Developer mode), but I am not sure will ColdFusion turns to Standard mode that I purchased ?
Any ideas ?
Thanks many,
Dev

With great depression, I finally have to re-install ColdFusion on my new server, however, when I type in the serial, I found the serial is marked as "Invalid". OH MY GOD, I finally find out what going wrong, but how do I make the serial alive ? Shall I call Adobe to replace a new serial for me ? or is there any way to disable the serial in current server (the old one) and to make it works again ?

If you have an invalid serial number, are you sure that it's the correct one for the version you're installing? I hate to state the obvious but - you never know
If you bought the software, certainly call Adobe and ask them to fix the problem.
Good luck! Once you enter a valid Standard or Enterprise serial, it will convert to that version.

Actually, the serial is valid to my old server, but when I apply it to the new one, it is invalid.
I think Adobe has marked the serial has been in-used, and so it becomes invalid when apply it the another server. Due to migration of server, I have tried many ways to disable the serial of my old server, before applying the same serial to the new one. However, it is all FAILED. I suggest Adobe should implement a better license transfer mechanism such as exporting a license token from my old one and import that token to the new server.
For now, I may probably contact Adobe to replace my license and apply it to my new server, then wait the old server license to be terminated.

I haven't ever seen any serial number validation in any version of ColdFusion 8 server. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but they don't do interenet serial number authorization in that version.
I'd call Adobe - they can give you a new serial or tell you if that's invalid.
Best of luck!

Let me rephrase that. I am talking about AFTER the software has been installed and you go into the CF Administrator in Developer mode and enter a valid standard or enterprise serial number.

Yes, I do tried to enter the serial in CF admin many times, it simply turn the Enterprise (trial) to Developer, not the Standard that I expected, even I modify the license.properties does not help. So I do re-installation to ColdFusion and find out that serial is invalid to the installer.
Do you mean I should re-install CF in Developer mode, and enter the serial to make it Standard edition ?
Thanks,
Dev

If the serial number doesn't work with the installer it sounds to me likes it's just an invalid serial.
But if you are convinced it's correct, I would uninstall it completely and then check the install location for any remaining folders, etc. and delete what's left behind (if anything). I'd then reinstall in developer mode.Once you have your server running, log into the CF Admin and enter your serial number there.
if it's valid, you will see ColdFusion convert to that version instantly. If the server remains in developer mode, the serial is invalid and it's time to look at the label, Adobe online order or call Adobe.

OH MY GOD, I finally figure out what is problem, since the serial is STANDARD edition, which only for 32-bit OS, but my new server is 64 bit so that's why the serial be marked as INVALID in 64-bit installer. The issue should be solved in the upcoming ColdFusion 9,

Glad I could help . I guess I missed the part about trying to run 64-bit OS with CF8.
I'm happy that it's solved. Issue closed!
Take care.
