Determine User's Network ID

Community Beginner ,
Oct 05, 2006 Oct 05, 2006
I remember from a long time ago there was a function that will tell a CF program a user's network ID if he/she is logged on to a local Microsoft network. Can someone please refresh my memory as to what that function is? For example, I am writing a program to run on our local Intranet. So, all of the users of this program will already be logged on to our Microsoft network. I just want to know what their user ID is. I don't need (or want) to know their network passwords.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Mike

Hi Mike,

I've done a couple of things in the past which might be of help to you.

Firstly you can grab the Windows NT Authentication from IIS. By default IIS hides this but if you turn this off then ColdFusion can access the current users info. We used it to validate users accessing an intranet system we developed recently. If you Google NT Authentication there is plenty of stuff about it.

I've also used LDAP in the past which can be used to validate username and password details against your network services. I find it a lot more secure and flexible but again you can find information on this on the Adobe Livedocs and by Googling LDAP.

Hope that helps.

#CGI.AUTH_USER# is very much like what I remember. But, I just tried this (surrounded by <cfoutput> and </cfoutput>) and nothing was displayed. Is there something else I need to do to use this?
