I occassionally get this message too.
As you have discovered, the only thing to do is kill the process and restart the Report Builder.
I have not figured out why this happens.

I have many fields, summary fields on the report,
Is it possible to have too many controls on the report that Report Builder can not handle?

I'm sure there is an upper limit to how many controls you can put in a report, but I bet it is very high.
I have some very complicated reports that don't appear to trigger this error, so I don't know if complexity is necessarily a factor.

I am able to insert 4 sub report when I have a brand new report, but once file saved then I can not insert any sub report. For sure, the contorls do not over limit, because I use same sub reports, if I can insert then when brand new report then for sue the number of controls do not over limit,
Thanks again for helping
